So as much as I love the GBA's full translation we should take care not to shit on the hard work of those who brought us this game back in the day. Even before we got the new translation this title was still a top 10 title of the forth gen.

and we didn't shit on it, that's why the good part of the older translation are not changed.
major example are Esper or Terra, they don't need a correction, so they were kept.
however to refuse the newer translation because they are not the same with the one from your childhood is plainly wrong, especially when they are done to fix the wrong aspects. take off the nostalgia goggles.

Re-read that earlier exchange and you'll see I don't prefer the old translation at all, quite the opposite. The Woolsey translation was getting an unfair amount of hate there for what was actually a hardware limitation, and I wanted to correct that narrative and help us better appreciate the creativity those limitations wrought. I love the SNES translation for what it gave me when I first played it, even with that translation FFVI would still be my favorite title of the franchise. Still, there's no denying the nuance the new translation adds to this story

Do they make it so his sword tech doesn't take 5 years to get to level 8?

it still is, but you dont need to wait for it. you select the skill first, then the atb charge comes after. therefore you can use the bushido skill without wasting other character's turn.

The original translation is better because the new one is dry, bland, and too direct. The original has a lot more charm, notable examples being Cyan's and Kefka's dialogue. It has less to do with nostalgia and more to do with a localization that resonates better with western audiences rather than a literal word-for-word translation. I went into the GBA port excited to experience a more authentic translation, only to find that most of the game's soul had been stripped away. That combined with the trainwreck bonus dungeon left me with no reason to ever replay FFVIA. More power to you if you enjoy the Advance port, but it's overall an objective step down from the original.

One key hint I can give that might go unmentioned otherwise: it could just be a personal problem, but I had an absolute devil of a time getting the d-pad rotations for Sabin's even-numbered Blitzes to work right on the GBA version.

The workaround is to simply press each direction twice instead of rotating. So instead of rotating down to left for Aurabolt (can't remember the retranslated name), just press down-down-left-A (press the final direction only once). Worked like a charm for me and blessedly made Sabin viable again.

And if you want to see what an actual lifeless retranslation looks like, go play Chrono Trigger DS. That shit was atrocious.

he wasn't bad on the original SNES version. i dunno why people always say that when the topic of FF6 comes up.

his abilities can't target specific foes and the better ones take FOREVER to charge. he has some decent setups at some points in the game, like combining Offering with Tempest once you get to the Sealed Cave.

IIRC, the biggest problem with Swdtech is simply that it ignores the equipped weapon's battle power. Magic moves scale well into lategame because the scaling with magic stat on everything is crazy good, but vigor-based moves are garbage lategame without scaling with your weapon. That's why Jump builds, Offering, etc. are great but Autocrossbow, Drill, Chainsaw, and Swdtech don't hold up at all.

Dispatch is still fairly good compared to what your mages have to offer early game (and is less of a pain than putting in the effort to consistently get 7-flush on Setzer), so don't be afraid to use Cyan for a while. He starts to fall off only around the time you have access to magic-boosting espers and tier 2 and 2.5 spells.

Speaking of Blitz, they are commands like Left, Right, Left. Some of them like like you have to roll your finger like you're throwing a fireball in Street Fighter, but you can just press Down, Down, Left and not have to roll your thumb on the Dpad

Aurabolt causes holy damage, btw. It's the only source of holy damage you get in the game for a veerrrryyyyy long time.

My advice is to enjoy the GOAT jrpg. Then, get your hands on the Brave New World mod which makes it 4000000x better.

I've played FF6 at least 2 times per year since like 1996.

The best character is Terra with Celes coming in second. Relm has a naturally higher magic stat that makes her the best mage in the game, but Terra can beat that with her trance skill before you even recruit her. Also Terra learns some good natural magic even without espers that let her abuse those stats quickly and throughout the whole game. Finally Terra can use all of the best gear, which Relm cannot. Really all of this is secondary. Under trance, hitting an enemy's elemental weakness with second level magic will often do 9999, enough damage to one-shot anything in the first 2/3s of the game.

Celes can also use all the best gear and learns natural magic which is the only reason she's in the running for second best, the issue is her unique skill is nothing compared to the stupidity of trance. I'd say her gear options put her over Relm, but that's open to argument.

Don't bother with the Wind God Gau setup that people recommend. He's powerful, but nowhere near as game breaking as they make it out to be. So, it's not worth all the time and exhaustion you will put into developing Gau.

Wind god gau can only be pulled off in the snes version anyway
Like the vanish doom exploit being fixed a lot of what made gau a wind god is not available for him to do anymore

Wind God Gau takes like 5 minutes to set up but the bug that made it work was fixed in the GBA. It also required the offering to actually be OP and it wasn't really even that OP. Absorb Fire gear + Quick + Doublecast Merton is the most OP thing in the game.

if you arent min maxing and are just playing casually then its a big deal because it makes relm one of the strongest party members and the first who will hit 9999 damage naturally

No the first is Terra because Morph.

Additionally, other characters have really useful skills, Sketch is generally a garbage move and she's not worth using until you get the relic that gives her Control

wtf if your point lol. Everybody knows that Relm has the best magic stat growth, but in a normal playthrough that never matters. Casual players will never get to a point where Relm will deal even close to that damage most likely.

And I'd argue that Morph is natural for Terra. She's half-esper >_>

I didn't usually use morph all that often since it has to recharge between activations. Also, once you start hitting weaknesses with second and third tier spells, the damage gets up there real quick 5k+ before leaving the WoB. I can't believe you get osmose so early in this game. As if magic damage scaling and the ability to exploit elemental weaknesses wasn't dumb enough. With osmose you will probably never need to attack again.

I'd actually suggest the opposite (catch slow fish) for better story continuity and emotional impact. The outcome for catching good fish doesn't make sense in the long run, eliminates a powerful scene, and removes context from part of the ending cinematic.

Maybe true. My first play through, I didnt know what I was doing. I was pretty young so didnt quite get the following scene. I played it again when I was older and didnt really notice a big difference story wise. But it had been a while.

I think I am going to play FF6 again after perusing this topic...
