Just made it to Hateno village recently. I never have enough money to buy anything. How the crap do I find money? I have a ton of amber and other material to sell but should I really sell them when I can use them to upgrade material later? Also where the crap do I get better clothes? The only clothing I know of are the ones from the shops and they're a buttload of money lol.

Is this normal or do I just suck?

Sell any gem you get except diamonds. Especially Amber, Opal, and Luminous Stones. They're worth a good amount and you get TONS of them by breaking every gem rock you find.

And to get a good amount when you need them, warp to the tower near Goron village and break every gem rock you find in the southern mine area. You can easily get like 30+ gems in that small area, AND there's a free Iron Sledgehammer there.

How to money:
Make a shit load of elixrs with 1 critter and 4 monster parts. They sell for at least 100 a pop in stores.

How to better gear:
1. Find the great fairy fountains. One of them is behind Kakriko Village (beyond the shrine in the mountain area just a bit). They cost rupees to unlock but will offer upgrades to your existing clothes. There are a total of 4 fountains to find (each unlocking a possible upgrade tier)
2. Go to Gerudo Town. They will have a jewelry shop that offers head armor that gives you more initial armor points (upgrades more expensively but will be your strongest armament).
3. Two sets are earned from shrines (one piece per set in a shrine for a total of 6 shrines). They are the climbing gear and the barbarian gear. Climbing gear is really only good for climbing stuff when equipped. Barbarian gear will up your attack power when equipped. Both are meh in terms of armor points.

I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading armor.

Like I don't even know why it's even a thing, defense from items seems to have negligible apparent effects and the only thing that really matters is how many hearts you have. Not to mention it's insanely easy to produce healing items.

Honestly I don't think I upgraded anything past level 2 searching and grinding for materials is just time you could spend finishing the game and in the end having maxed out armor isn't even remotely necessary to do anything.

Armor definitely makes a difference in how much damage you take. If you have enough food and fairies, you don't really have to worry about dying, but having good armor makes it so you don't have to worry about having enough food and fairies all the time. Plus, against stronger enemies like Lynels, getting hit while having no armor is pretty much an insta-death.

No, armor isn't absolutely necessary, but it definitely helps while you're learning enemy tells and attacks.
