And I happened to randomly walk down the Nintendo aisle and saw this. Just had to get it.

Total impulse buy, I know. But I've got the money, and this is basically my childhood in a box. My parents wouldn't let my brother & I own a console until the N64, but every weekend we were allowed to go to the video store at the corner and rent a console and 3 games (1 just for me, 1 just for my brother, and 1 we both had to agree on). The guy at the video store was the coolest dude ever, too. I'd always pick out my games really quick so that I could just go talk to him about video games while my mom and my brother browsed.

We rented the NES a bunch when it was basically the only option, and picked up the Genesis a few times, but once the SNES came out we got it pretty much every single weekend for years. I can't even tell you how many hours I put into it. And every weekend we'd go to the video store with our fingers crossed hoping beyond hope that the cartridge we rented would be lucky enough to be the same one from last weekend and our save files would still be intact.

I still remember the soul-crushing pain of getting Super Mario World for 4 straight weeks and getting so close to finally beating it only to rent it on week 5 and popping it in to see some random's name in my save slot. ;_; I told the store guy about it and he looked almost as devastated as I was. Then he grabbed a piece of masking tape, wrote my name on it, and stuck it on the cartridge. He said "nobody is renting your cartridge again until you beat this game, little buddy!" Then he hid it in a bunch of stuff behind the counter. Every week from then on I'd walk in and he'd give me a wink, reach behind the counter, and hand me my copy of Super Mario World. XD

I don't even care that I'll probably play it for 2 weeks and then forget about it again. It's going to be a glorious 2 weeks. ^_^

Nice! I used to rent SNES games from the local store every weekend as a kid. Must've rented Super Mario RPG like 2 months straight when it came out >_> Shit was so cash.

Why were you parents so hesitant to just get a console?
Weekly renting was probably more than buying out right

It wasn't the cost they were worried about. They didn't want us spending all day every day playing video games. I mean, gaming was still kind of in its infancy back then. And they were paranoid about it destroying our minds or something like that.

Basically, they were afraid our grades or our sports would suffer (my brother and I both played soccer and baseball). When we did eventually get the N64 for Christmas, we had really strict rules about when we were allowed to play it and for how long. At most 2 hours in a day, and only after all of our homework was finished. And we couldn't play it at all the night before we had a test in school. If we got below a C on a test we weren't allowed to play it for 2 weeks. If we had anything below a B on our report card we weren't allowed to play it until the next report card (thankfully neither of us managed to get hit with that one...). Things like that.

They didn't have anything to worry about. My brother and I both pretty much breezed through grade school without even trying. Half the time we finished our homework on the bus ride home, ffs.

Congrats, I saw some in Walmart a few days before Christmas and of course I didn't have the money for it. Now I do and haven't been able to come across any.
