On the plus side, they never got around to creating unskippable ads on those old tapes.

I miss VHS. It had a certain charm that DVDs/Blurays can't replicate.

one time I was at a friend's house watching Aliens. and we tried to take the tape out and it seemed stuck and we were worried we had broken something. then his dad came home and was able to get it out.

There was something about the combination of the fidelity of the TVs of the time, plus the "tracking" overlay in the corner that disappeared after ten seconds or so, plus the FBI warning screen before your movie started, and if you paused it the image could be all weird and janky. And the feel of the machine taking the VHS when you fed it in.

There was something so satisfying about putting a VHS in a VCR. That mechanical feel and everything.

Putting a disc in isn't very satisfying in that way.

You kids and your VHS tapes. Back in my day, we had Betamax, and no one complained about the 5 movies we got to choose from.

Oh don't remind me.

How many times have I brought a VHS tape to a friend's house only for him to be like "oh sorry we only have beta"

Those Beta elitists were truly something else >_>

Betamax was the higher quality format if you were a home theater cinephile in that time. The players were just more expensive and they could hold less video if used at the highest quality setting. They also recorded TV in superior quality to the VHS. If it wasn't for the fact that a Betamax player cost 3x what's a VCR cost then everyone would've gone Betamax.
