Yeah both games are great. And Odyssey is more like what Sunshine wanted to be but couldn't. Easy to understand gimmick that doesn't take away platforming and is flexible as hell, worlds that are much more fluid in objectives and rewards exploration.

Mario Galaxy was awesome whether it was awesome or not is irrelevant, Galaxy had clashing ideas behind it and the ultimately prime philosophy developed into Galaxy 2 then further into 3D Land and 3D World it feels like rather than continuing from 64 or Sunshine like they claimed, the remains of the other direction found in Galaxy were revived into Odyssey, with the only thing taken from 64 or Sunshine being the more expansive controls for Mario found in 64 ... I love that I'm not just choosing a level in the world and then going back to the world to choose the next level. It's much more smooth and I can keep exploring the same world even after I get a moon. I dunno. Galaxy felt like them trying to find a middle ground between traditional 2D Mario and 3D Mario. Each level is focused on a single theme. The upside of this is that they could really design some platforming obstacles to take advantage of these themes.
