Any tips on catching a stray cat?

My neighbors moved away a couple weeks ago and I think they left their cat behind :(

It's getting really cold, dipping into the single digits (F) and even below zero and lower with wind chill. Want to bring the poor thing indoors. Put out some turkey in a dish at my front and rear doors, been checking the dishes and they're still untouched. The cat has been around our house, sometimes sleeps against our basement windows, probably because they give off a modest amount of heat. But when I call it it's hesitant to come over, and any attempt to approach makes it run away.

Appreciate any advice. Don't want to call animal control because they'll destroy it in my town unless it's chipped, and I highly doubt it's chipped as the neighbors didn't even bother to fix it. If I can catch it, there's a few no-kill shelters in my area I can surrender it to, but mostly I just want to make sure the cat doesn't freeze to death or suffer some cold-related injuries.

Well for one, you don't want to place it right next to the door, get it further out.

Also, depending on how old the cat is, you probably won't be able to actually get over to the cat to catch/pet it.

Speaking of, the Attn: Immortality topic is gone but, in it, Foxx mentioned being Asian. Well, Russia is in Asia. Coincidence?

Thanks, I'll try moving the dishes out from the house a bit.

I have some boxes left over from Christmas, I could probably rig up a makeshift shelter and line it with some blankets.

I'd suggest putting out food and making a cat shelter for kitty. It's too cold to try and trap. And it's really tricky because it's not your cat coming to something familiar, it's an abandoned cat out in the cold.

You can try to keep a door open a few inches to see if the cat will come inside. Keep food near it. Maybe not a house door in that cold but a garage would work well.

http://www.catster.com/cat-chic/build-a-cozy-low-cost-cat-shelter-for-outdoor-cats

When you can entice cat inside you can have it scanned at a vet clinic for a microchip. It's not going to do any good with an abandoned animal but it would determine the previous owner anyway. And the cat may have escaped when they moved (cats freak out during moving) and they couldn't get to it, you never know.

Pretty sneaky, sis! (Although Russians are often considered white despite Russia being in Asia.)

All right Zeus, let's play the history/sociology game.

1. Where did Russia originally come from? Like the location. (Hint: it's Europe, they expanded *super* far east so they could get a port that didn't freeze every winter)
2. What's Russia's government more similar to, China and China-related countries (basically what people talk about when they talk about Asian countries), or Europe?
3. What religion was Russia a majority of before badtimes? (Hint: It's Christianity)
4. Where is the majority of Russian population in relationship to the Ural mountains (the supposed dividing line between Europe and Asia). Hint: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Russia
5. Does the stereotypical look Chinese or Chinese-related? Because unless you're talking about the mongols who just happened to get into Russian territory, they're all white.

If there's Russian in my family then my family sucks at being Russian. My Ukrainian family were not fans of Russia but they're all dead so they're not fans of anything any more.

Fun care of genetic testing. I do have that .3% East Asian so perhaps I'm even more Asian than those two.

It was a gift years ago (and I think it was 250 CAD then). 23andme. Tried to find connections to biological family since they're unknown due to adoption. They have a sale on now so check it out.

If you want just the ancestors and not the health testing it's cheaper too.

Other than parts of Africa, everybody moved around. The Chinese didn't start in China either. As for Russian history, I'm sure Foxx knows a lot more about it than I.

In general, human migratory patterns have never been something which I can recall in great detail, assuming that much time was devoted to it at all. American schools and such.

How exactly does government or culture correlate with either genetics or geography, though? And, historically speaking, Europe and most of Asia were pretty big on variations of the whole monarchy thing. (And, of course, royals married royals so certain traditions would carry over at the noble level but not necessarily at the serf level.)

If they do count as white, why did you go through that long discussion? Otherwise I think I just assumed that there was more mongol heritage than there actually was. I *thought* I remembered something about a large segment of the population having a certain amount of Mongolian ancestry, but haven't been able to google it so far.

Thanks! Ended up going to bed last night but I did some of this on my own. We don't have any pets of our own so I'm going to pick up some cat food after work. The turkey we left out was frozen solid... still untouched :/

That shelter in the link is pretty neat. A lot better than my cardboard box + fleece blanket set up.

We don't have a garage but we do have a screened in porch. I'm going to leave the door open a bit with some food inside and some food just outside the door.

The covered porch should work well.

The shelter linked is very good for the cold. Blankets are nice but if kitty has snow on it, they get damp and turn into icy sheets before long.

Good luck with your cat capture!

This topic reminds me of a stray cat who always visits out house. The only difference is this cat is friendly and trained well it seems so we let her in and feed her when it's cold outside.
