Whole family was in tears while we were doing it. Me? Couldn't shed a single one. I was sad, sure. But... This wasn't a surprise. She was 13 years old (insane for a dog her size), and has been in failing health for the last year or so. I think I was already mentally prepared for it.

But I still feel bad with how stoic I was when the rest of the family was tearing through Kleenex boxes.

That doesn't make you a monster. People grieve differently. It may hit you later on, or never.

I didn't shed a tear during my grandma's funeral services. I cried over the phone with my mom once, and that was it. Like you, I felt mentally prepared for the day.

I never cry for family/pet dying of old age. It's totally expected and pretty much the best way to go. What more can I ask for.

Don't. People deal with things differently. I didn't shed a tear when my sister or nan died. I also didn't when we had to put our cat to sleep. I find it good in a way as I can be a good shoulder to cry on. Anyway sorry about your loss man.

I recently put my 15 year old dog down as well. My dad and brother cried visibly while it happened but I kinda stared in disbelief for like 30 minutes. I spent the next 20 minutes sitting at her side with my hands cupped around the sides of her head and staring at her in shock how it looked like she was just sleeping. My eyes got watery but I don't remember sheding a tear. I still felt like crap. Like other people have already said, people grieve in different ways. You're not a monster.

so sorry for your loss :( you'll find a way to grieve sooner or later

I completely lost it two years ago when I woke up and saw my dog already gone. she was an 11 yr old jack Russell/corgi mix that surrendered to cancer, have her ashes, but I'll always think of the adventures she had, how nosy she was (she found me when she was a puppy, and her siblings were still sleeping), and all of her other moments.

it sucks that dogs don't live for long, but at least you had a bond

People grieve differently, as everyone else has said. I have been like that, too. That being said, I will probably cry, well, for the rest of my life when my dog goes.

How'd you put the dog down? You said you did it, but did you shoot it or give it the sleepy blue juice at the vet's?

If you shot it I can see how your family would think you're a monster.

Thanks everyone. Admittedly the topic was more about a moment of guilt as I made this not long after she was put down. I do feel better about it now that some time has passed.

Definitely let the vet handle it.

That's good. When I had to put my dog down the vet let me give her the last shot-thingy, it was nice. My dad just wanted me to bring her to his house and put her down in the yard, was like fuck that noise.
