I spent about an hour before lunch today loading files onto a laptop as part of a presentation I was supposed to give. Opened the computer during the meeting and saw it had just installed some major update, which wouldn't let me use the machine for about 10 minutes.

i thought most large companies coordinated these updates so they controlled when they happened? mine always get installed overnight while i'm not working, same with the virus scanner

That's what you get for not updating in the first place. Forced updates are probably the best thing Windows has done for it's security in the recent years.

honestly, if i worked Help Desk at a company that just let users install any update they wanted whenever, I'd be terrified. if people can screw it up, they will.

Hell, I'm an admin for a small company and I make sure the updates are pushed at 3 AM.

I would have preferred if it held firm on updating the next time it went fully to Standby, or was logged off, instead of eh you havent been here for 10 minutes Ill start now but maybe now well see a lot less Conficker-style problems like Wannacry, where people are leaving machines unpatched for multiple years. Ive seen companies compromised by basic Microsoft attacks from 2015 this year alone, still got vast swathes of companies not sure of theyve patched all their PHP since 2012.

It pisses me off too, my computer doesn't even seem to update properly. Every time I restart my computer it says it's installing updates for about half an hour, but then it turns around and asks me to install the same update again a little while later. It's been doing this shit for months and it's really infuriating.

Our updates are pushed through group policy. We have 4 hours once the update is downloaded to start the installation. If you have something to do in 10 minutes, you wait. If you have something to do in 2 hours, restart immediately.

It's not that hard of a concept.

Even on a home PC you can disable it using registry hacks. Stupid there's no official option though.
