I just take the day (well, usually the week) off because everyone else at work does too and it's convenient, and give presents or go out with friends/family because it makes people happy. My calendar tells me I'm doing all that on Christmas day, so it's just the easiest way to explain to others what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. I'm "celebrating Christmas". Anything else and I'd have to explain in a lot more details than is really needed. Where I live it's two days free (25 and 26) and for most people one or two weeks free. This is to brighten up the darkest winter days. It's a time to see family and friends and do fun things. It makes people more happy (except lonely people who are generally less happy during christmas). For the same reason we put up lights and other decorations. And put a tree with decorations in our house. It's a weird but fun tradition. Some people give presents. some people have a big dinner. Christmas is celebrated by athiests, christians, sometimes muslims and jews as well except if they're very religious, and most of all by normal (as in not affiliated with a religion) people. They all think it's okay to celebrate because they grew up with it and/or everyone is doing it, having fun and harming nobody. The only religious thing that's connected is the christmas stable based on the story of baby Jesus. But I don't see a deep religious meaning in that story. Easter is even less religious. It actually does have a christian backstory with some meaning, but I don't know anyone who connects that with easter.
