cultural phenomenon? The Simpsons maybe? But only in terms of its ubiquitous popularity. I can't really think of what the equivalent would be in terms of how widespread it is in other forms of media, how much people discuss the rich lore, etc.

Harry Potter, Simpson's, Pokemon, maybe Call of Duty.

Star Wars is probably still the biggest.

Harry Potter or even Lord of the Rings were both pretty popular with large groups of people.

Keep in mind there are still many people who (often proudly) have never watched Star Wars, will never watch Star Wars, and have no idea what's going on in the series

I thought about LotR, but I don't know if that counts since it was based on books that pre-date SW (same thing with MCU). Of course, the movies certainly helped it surge in popularity, but if you go by when something became popular rather than when it was created, then that really opens this question up to pretty much anything since the internet at large is post-SW.

i agree with all the things from the top, but they all have their fault that can't reach the same level as star wars.

for example harry potter took everyone from storm, but there are no action figures like star wars. Same goes with lord of the ring... sure there are lords of the ring toys but they don't sell as well as star wars.

Pokemon is lacking the story. i can't pass down the pokemon story like i can with star wars. mass majoirty can't tell you what the story was in gen 1-6 (i have no clue how many gens is pokemon in). while in star wars there is acutally jedi religion in our real world right now.

Star Trek is also very popular. If merchandise is your yard stick for this SW is going to have it all beat. It was the original major merchandise tie in film series for kids

Would Jurassic Park count?
Jurassic World did become one of the highest grossing movies of all time iirc. (And that's mainly because it was just a new Jurassic Park movie.)

Yeah, but it didnt spawn a shitload of books, comics, and etc.

But it did though?
Not nearly as much as Star Wars, but it still had comics, books, games, etc.

Not nearly as much pretty much sums up my point. It went dormant for many years before World came out. I would really say it was the next biggest one.

You're right.

I don't think Harry Potter, LotR, Simpsons, GoT, etc. would count either.

Pokemon definitely counts. It has had new media created yearly since it's creation.
(And multiple media too.)
It has video games, anime, movies, books, manga/comics, board games, etc.

Star Trek, DC, and Marvel all started before Star Wars iirc.
Although I would argue that Marvel and DC's popularity skyrocketed after Star Wars...

Star Wars went dormant too after RotJ, you can't knock a lull in more recent stuff while excusing that.

I had a good dozen JP comic books, kids books, many video games across many platforms, toys, bed sheets, the works! They merched the heck out of it. Plus the Crichton books were there.

It actually didnt. It was very much alive for almost the entire time. Books, comics, games, roll playing games, expanded universe.

It was relatively dormant through the mid 80s to the early 90s when they released the movies on VHS and laserdisc as THX remasters (before the Lucas remasters)

Relatively.

There was still some Star Wars merch in many forms in that time. Just not as much everywhere as often. They still put out video games, toys, EU media, etc. I remember that time period pretty well, my dad was a huge Star Wars fan and he was waiting for ages to get copies of the movies and to find some more specific merch. That stuff is unavoidable now.

But when these 90s rereleases hit theaters it went back up in a big way. The prequels weren't far behind that. Between the 3rd prequel and EP 7 it was more active than that decade lull

The Simpsons are a household name, sure. I guess Pokemon also kinda counts in that tons of people know about it and it keeps getting new attention, but it's not quite the same thing.

Actually, the Simpsons is great in many regards given that it's had a similar cultural impact. The show is probably as widely quoted as Star Wars, if not more so.

It's big, but it's also recent and nowhere near as possible. Honestly, major network TV shows like The Office probably had a bigger stir. That said, it's still an okay parallel.

Yes, merchandising is a *huge* thing. Star Wars *constantly* has stuff coming out. Whenever you walk down a toy aisle, you're guaranteed to see Marvel, DC Comics, Pokemon, and Star Wars. And Transformers, of course.

Actually, Transformers is a great comparison. Transformers has had multiple blockbuster films, consistent tv shows and comics, an expansive lore, countless video games, and obscene amounts of merchandise. It also has a low-end kiddy market and a high-end NEEEEEEERRRRRDDDDD!!! market. (And I totally nerded out once and bought a huge $80 Thundercracker figure from TRU once.

Could never figure out how to transform the damn thing, though. Instructions were too complicated.

Yeah, but there were long gaps in between merchandising spells. Star Wars has pretty much always been at retail since first coming out.

It is definitely the most overblown that's for sure. I'm not sure how they squeezed this much out of three fairly good fantasy movies of the late 70's/early 80's but that's sort of what corporatization of film will get ya.
