Their aesthetic is quite different, obviously, but the general formula is extremely similar. People constantly returning from the dead, deus ex machina everywhere, increasingly powerful foes appearing (with a select few becoming allies), primarily centred around a family known for stopping bad guys, many believe it peaked at the end of the first major arc (Frieza / Lucifer), heaven/hell stuff...

I have been watching supernatural lately and I agree but it came back during season 9. I'm in season 10 right now but season 9 was good.

Yeah, S1-5 of Supernatural were amazing. After that, it went from being one of my favourites to just a show I liked enough to continue watching. Season 9 did start getting better, and I thought it found its stride again during season 10 and continues to be pretty good. I think dragging out all the angel garbage (either as direct or indirect foes) across as many seasons as they did hurt it.

Not really, because they don't have multiple-episode long fight sequences and, unlike DBZ, it's mostly a monster-of-the-week format.

idk, I liked the fallout after Lucifer. Also season 9 was all kinds of dicey, particularly that everybody just takes Lucifer's word about Michael when a second archangel would have been pretty useful.

Otherwise season 10 was all kinds of awful (other than Lucifer's brief stint as Vincent Vincente or whatever). BML was cliche as hell and, despite their PR, incredibly bad at their jobs. Like monumental fuckups. And, of course, the finale was just flat-out terrible.

In general, my favorite villains were the Leviathan since not only were they were unbelievable sinister, but they were far more competent than every villain thus far. Granted, I initially disliked how OP they were.

I'm not a TV watcher. There's seriously a show that calls itself a genre tag? How's it even brand itself?

Its been on for more than a decade so I've probably seen the name dozens of times and ignored it.

Large parts of the Supernatural series were very focused on the major story arc and creature features largely fell by the wayside. That was part of why it got crappy after season 5.

I'd really like a "what if" season where they explore the "Lucifer wins" concept in greater detail than that one episode with Dean experiencing it. Show the lead up and make it its own for a year.

Focusing on the story arc isn't the same thing as watching a fight. And if "it has continuity" is your argument, that includes countless tv shows. Frankly, DBZ has more in common with most soap operas than it does with Supernatural -- given that soap operas also have multiple things happening at once broken across episodes for no good reason except to drag on time. And soaps *frequently* involve characters coming back from the dead and things being resolved in weird, unexpected ways.

The problem with that is that it was so underwhelming. It was just Earth but junkier. Frankly, season 10's alternate reality where the angel and devil war is still waging was more interesting, *especially* because it could bring back characters.

A few of those shouldn't really count because they face-turned *in* their first appearance (such as Oolong and Ox King) and, to some extent, weren't really a bad guy in the first place (ie, Krillin and Ox King).

Also, when did Android 17 turn good? I thought he "died" a villain when Cell got him

17 came back right away, you just dont see him again till the Buu saga in a throw away scene, and becomes a major player during the latest ark in Super, plus Oolong was more so "evil" and wanted no part with helping, and was terrorizing that village. Ox King was the only real stretch. Also Krillin even said he didnt like Goku when they first met. and was kinda an ass to him.

Blargh, Super. Of course it'd be Super.

Doesn't really make him a baddy. And there are plenty of characters who disliked Goku upon first meeting him who quickly changed their opinion.

Eh, first season was kinda shit for it though. Seasons 2-3 might have been the best in that regard.

Animated shows are always easier because it's more convenient to replace VAs and actors aging is less of an issue. At any rate, obligatory:
