Friend said to just trust them and play it. It started out as this mundane interactive novel/date sim game, but now I think I'm losing my marbles. How is this game free when it's better than most games that people pay $70 to play?

It's a fantastic game. Anyways, you can donate to the game on the developer's page, and he's said he made it free because (in-game spoilers) the game is not what it appears to be and he didn't want to be accused of deceptive advertising.

Once I am in a more stable financial position, I will definitely donate to this person. This game is my GotY. Nothing else released this year has made me feel such a wide variety of emotions. Nothing has made me stop and think about life itself as much as this game. One of the characters feels like an exact replica of myself, and I went through something that's eerily similar to what happened in this game. I'm just blown away...

After you install Doki-Doki Literature Club, don't even look at Steam's news tab underneath the play button.

I'm not sure how spoilerish it is but it's probably going to suck to be spoiled that way.

ok well that was much better than i was expecting... i figured at least one of them was gonna go crazy from the start, but i really thought it would be sayori cuz she seemed to have the least spotlight of the girls... but turns out monika took that angle about not getting enough attention instead, although the three chibi girls in the corner of the notebook while writing the poems did kind of tip me off. monika was the only one of the three who was smiling. i didn't get the good ending i think, but monika has been talking to me in a room for like a half hour now. the whole "knowing" your name trick is pretty neat, but nothing too amazing. the parts that did get me though.. the favorite color and the super smash bros thing... green is my favorite color and i had just been playing smash before i started playing this so those two lines really did kind of get me lol. As for the overall horror aspect, it wasn't really scary, but it was certainly more than interesting enough to hold my attention. certainly enjoyed it.

I liked Yuri. Maybe because I have an unnatural attraction to goth girls, and just dark things in general? Also the long purple hair...

I think it was more about what the game turns into, and the atmosphere it gives off compared to the beginning that makes him feel like it's a horror game.

I'm normally not into visual novels, especially dating sim visual novels, but when I finally decided to check out Doki Doki Literature Club! after seeing it trending in my YouTube subscription feed for at least a few months, it became one of my favorite games of 2017. However, my one biggest regret of playing this was playing this game... BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP! When I finally got to Sayori's death scene, it was 2:00 a.m. and I was lying in bed, playing this game on my phone, remote streaming from my computer via Remotr app. I had major goosebumps that night but luckily, I did not get any nightmares. But I had like 1 or 2 good dreams with DDLC! characters.

When I first played it, I went full Yuri (she's my favorite character since I relate to her personality, being a shy and smart introvert who can get talkative when going into interesting topics (I get so talkative online while I hardly talk to anyone IRL), not counting her modified personality in Act 2 when Monika gradually-but-exponentially boosted her obsessive traits, turning Yuri yandere, but at least I'm glad Yuri became aware that something is wrong with herself in that act. But I don't know if the self-cutting habit is Yuri's real habit [that she does in general] or if it's an Act 2-exclusive habit caused by Monika to make Yuri less likable.). I also like her looks: She's cute when she acts timid. My type of girl (especially since Hinata of Naruto is my favorite Naruto female character), if I ever actually get interested in romance (which I don't in real life, only for myself).

Right now, I have many ideas (I have such a huge imagination) I would like to do for a fan-made mod (or two), but I have no skills in game making in RenPy.

It is her real habit. When she hangs out with you during the weekend, there's the scene where she talks about her knife collecting hobby. Also there's the poem she writes about cutting. And again during that weekend visit, there's a scene where you go to collect water for painting, and when you come back it says Yuri quickly rolls her sleeve back down.
