https://www.reddit.com/r/korea/comments/5ibef6/why_is_it_that_koreans_dont_produce_body_odor/

http://www.verygoodlight.com/2016/12/14/koreans-dont-produce-body-odor/

A high percentage of Korean patients have the mutation called ABCC11 which alters the composition of sweat so that they do not produce body odor, he confirms with Very Good Light. Body odor is produced when sweat is broken down by bacteria that live naturally on the skin. Depending on the composition of the sweat, odor may be different or have no smell at all when broken down by bacteria. The mutation does not alter the production of sweat at all, so wetness itself is not affected. Antiperspirants may be still necessary to reduce sweating, even if a deodorant effect is not needed.

My wife's Chinese and she's the same way. She's never used deodorant, never smells. Sweating her ass off doing yard work in August, smells like a flower.

Flowers have a smell. Smelling like a flower =/= not having a smell.

"Smells" in common vernacular carries a negative connotation. If somebody says "That smells!" nobody's wondering whether they mean if it smells good or if it smells bad.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABCC11

The gene is responsible for determination of human cerumen type (wet or dry ear wax) and presence of underarm osmidrosis (odor associated with sweat caused by excessive apocrine secretion).

The frequency of alleles for dry ear wax and odorless sweat is most concentrated in East- and Northeast Asia, most notably Korea, China, Mongolia, and western Japan.[7] Conversely the frequency of the allele for wet ear wax and odored sweat are highest in African-American and sub-saharan populations.[7]

While I was abroad, a common complaint I heard Japanese people make about foreign travelers was that they smelled. I thought it was a hygiene issue at first or people not wearing deodorant, but talking through it I realized it was a difference in genetics.

Sweat composition is different for a lot of Asian people such that they don't need deodorant, thus why a lot of travelers to Japan and Korea have difficulty buying deodorant. Most people born there will never need it.

This isn't just a north or east Asian thing, or even really an Asian thing. These genetic differences manifest across continents and really any major community in which there are significant genetic differences.

I don't smell as far as I know of. I smell in traditional ways, like if I don't take a shower for a week and a half I start to smell.

But I won't be offensive after just sweating.

It may not be offensive, but you almost certainly have a smell. Even after just twelve hours after showering, your perspiration will have left residue in the fibers of your clothing.

When you wake up in the mornings and pry yourself away from your pillow, do you really notice nothing?

I've never noticed a smell, or been informed of a smell, except when going without showering or changing clothes for 4-6+ days.

There should be two word, one for smelling good and one for smelling bad.

There are several words to indicate both states of smell. Noisome, pungent, acrid, rank, musty, putrid, fragrant, aromatic, heady, redolent. There's even a word for smell that would generally be good in moderation but are offensive in excess, cloying.

Beards keep you warm. Body odor may have at once been identifiable, and in a thing by which someone else might recognize you. Or it might have been useful for marking territory.

Yea, but none of those is commonly used.
For example, in my native language there's two seperate commonly used words for smelling nicely and badly.
While there's no common word for smelling well in English.
When someone says "smell", I instantly assume it's bad. Idk, maybe it's just me.

It's literally meant for sexual attraction. people don't associate it with that anymore though because of an entire century's worth of marketing campaigns designed to tell them they shouldn't.
