There are some tricks. For stills, make it affect the posture. For action shots or animation, try to sell the idea of 'pulling' the weapon around by the hilt rather than swinging it. Nightmare in Soul Calibur does this pretty well.

basically, you make it appear to have weight. instead of a dude swinging a gigantic sword around like it weighs absolutely nothing, you give swings weight to it.
