All the time. Any time I need to support a new client I have to adhere to their hiring policies. Not all have required one, but I do about 2 or 3 a year.

My current employer is one of the biggest in the US in the drug testing business

So yes I got a drug test before working for them.

Current job, no. I had to do a mouth swab test to get hired at my last job though.

Neither of my last two jobs, both of which involve working with kids, ever drug tested me. If there were one field where drug tests should be a thing, I would think education/childcare would be it... But nope.

Yeah, I worked at a school for six years... had to do a background check but no drug test.

Only job that every required one was when I was a temp at the postal distribution center over the holiday season one year ages ago.

I had to pass a piss test to get the job and I can be drug tested at any time but in 4 years I've only been drug tested once. I was nervous as fuck because it was a week after some serious weekend binging. I was clean though, by some miracle.

I've never been drug tested in my life. My boss knew I smoked weed before his business existed and he also knew that the employee he hired next after me smoked weed before hiring him (boss' wife is my cousin and the other employee is a longtime friend of his, so we had direct connection privilege, along with everyone else. He doesn't care about what people do in their free time. None of us partake in anything or are under the influence of anything while at work, so no issues)

It's definitely a vestige of the 1980s war on drugs mania, like you don't need to a fucking piss test to work on an excel spreadsheet all day lmao

Yeah, teaching is fairly well known for not drug testing at any level, although there are probably exceptions. Stands out compared to most industries/professions that never test since its pretty respectable and provides a nice enough living. I dont know why - Im guessing it comes down to cost, which would make sense. But a lot of sectors engage in it almost because everyone else does it. Corporate peer pressure. Or because of insurance which gives them monetary breaks for doing it on everybody.

Demographics, maybe? Education is a predominantly female field and requires at least a Master's in some states... Not exactly the typical druggie background lol
