I don't know how it is in other places, but in my county, the kids from several elementary schools graduate and go on to a unified middle school. So there's a lot of strangers meeting for the first time. That's probably the main reason. Also, the middle school and high school students ride the bus together. I'm guessing that's because some of the older high schoolers drive. This guy also served a 27-month prison sentence for an assault involving him using a baseball bat on another man and served a five-year youth custody sentence for firearms offences all after he left school. Probably a lot more than this under his belt too. I feel bad for his kids more than anything. Not his wife and she knows very well what he's like. Probably before even having kids with him. Still I see this as karma.
