just got done rewatching it on blu-ray and my mother saw it for the first time...she enjoyed it a lot

but now that it's over I'm starting to remember how much i enjoyed this when it first came out and more so when it aired on adult swim

as for my mother well she's a little bummed it's over and there aren't many animes if any at all like death note in the way it operated and how it played out

it's a very amazing series that i highly recommend to anyone

I wouldn't say masterpiece, but it's pretty good, yeah. It starts out amazing, it gets even better...and then it loses a lot of impact and focus down the road. The entire 2nd half of the series is just ok at best for the most part. It's got a lot of "omg awesome" moments though.

I thought of a real masterpiece though, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Great all the way through.

the second half does fall apart a bit but it's still a pretty great series

kinda sucks most modern anime don't go for the cat and mouse thriller vibe that death note went with

it's hard to find an anime that pulls off the tone that death note did

Pretty much. I quite liked it up until lolspoilers, and then everything after that was basically a rehash of the first half but with more gimmicky characters, a whole lot more "because I'm smart deal with it" in place of actually explaining clever plans, and an ending that amounted to nothing more than "I second-guessed you 31 times!" "Ha! I second-guessed you 32 times! I win! *roll credits*," which was thoroughly disappointing.

I would've been LESS disappointed with that ending. The ending was "you trusted an underling to handle things but didn't take into account that he might act on his own once at the same time you did, thus revealing your entire plan and you have no backup plan just in case."

Also the physical mechanics behind how he was outsmarted were a bit...absurd.

It was engrossing, at least the first half. Before they got rid of the most interesting character, and in a really lame way, too

It annoys me how fans and critics alike give Light a pass on being "a genius," though. Dude can come up with elaborate plans at times, but he's a complete dumb ass, and pretty much all of his victories are the result of sheer dumb luck / plot armor.
The major adversaries trying to find/expose him repeatedly outsmart him, despite knowing far less about him and his (supernatural) capabilities than he knows about them. Only for him to be saved by factors out of his control, the investigating character having a momentary inexplicable lapse of sense (idiot ball), or other characters saving his ass.

With his powers and the police not really even considering such a possibility, he should've had a cake walk, instead he's his worst enemy, always leaving trails to pursue due only to his outright carelessness and arrogance. Which makes for entertaining drama, no question. But stop acting like he's so brilliant.
