(pointless venting topic)

There have been several stories I have seen lately (mainly on reddit) about a student being severely bullied and then committing suicide or something else. And with most of those stories I have seen an overwhelming number of comments about how schools never do anything and never take bullying seriously.

I just want to say that I don't think people realize how hard it is to actually deal with a problem like this.

Most of the time it happens when no adult is around. So at that point there is no witness and it is basically he said he said situation. Do you realize how untrustworthy children are? Not only do they lie all the time, but they often simply cant remember what happened in a situation. Some parents want another child expelled based solely on what their child says. Would they be okay with their child being expelled based solely on what another kid said? Absolutely not.

I've worked in a bunch of different type of school settings in my career (inner city, rural, rich suburbs) and I have never met a teacher or administrator who was fine with bullying occurring, or saw it happen and just didn't care enough to address it - yet that is what I hear people say all the time. It's just not the case.

Recently at my school a family has complained that their son has been bullied relentlessly by another student. However most of the incidents were literally "he kept staring at my son" or he "was making faces at my son" The have threatened to sue the district if the problem is not dealt with. But how do you deal with that? Is the other student not allowed to look around the room or something? We actually put them in different classes, and not the bullied child is flat out making up stories about the other kid because his parents are telling him to do so. So if he is making stuff up now who is to say everything he said isn't just made up?

tl:dr - Bullying can be a very serious problem, but I don't think people realize how hard of an issue it is to actually deal with and eliminate.

I've heard a lot of stories, and also had some experiences of my own like this, where one kid starts bullying another, then the other kid tries to get him to stop, and then the teacher just yells at the boys for causing problems and punishes them both. It's a war on boys by female teachers who have the assumption that the boys are all troublemakers.
