Well... of the games mentioned so far, I only own Adventures of Lolo.

Guess I can play that while I acquire Trails (since obviously that's what the vast majority of this board wants me to play).

I'm not sure I've hooked up the old NES this year... time to get it running again.

So far so good. System, A/V cable (yellow/red), AC adapter, controller, and game found. Now to just put everything together (and avoid the green screen/flashing screen of death)...

Oh wow, less than 5 adjustments of the cartridge to get the game going!

There's a weird buzzing sound coming from the tv though, I'm pretty sure this archaic set is on its last legs. That said, with the main theme going, I can pretty much ignore the buzzing.

50 stages over 10 floors.

Incidentally, anyone ever find it weird how the door in the 4th stage moves when it opens?

On the third floor (12 stages down).

This game does a few things that the later ones don't, namely letting you keep any shots after collecting the jewel (though they don't have a use), and sometimes gives you shots even when you don't need any to finish the stage (Floor 3 with 2 leepers gives you 4 shots but it's really easy to just put them to sleep somewhere out of the way.)

First death on stage 5-2: forgot to push the block near the arrow down before pushing the other block through the arrow.

Started floor 7. 30/50 complete

Died on 7-1, sadly, was careless and took an errant fireball to the face (which is pretty much all Lolo is, come to think of it). 7-2 is probably one of the scariest stages in the game from an initial view, but it's really not that bad. 7-3... the game's went into flashing blue screen of death.

good thing there's such a thing as passwords, but I gotta get this fixed first.

There. FINALLY.

After 100 different garbled screens, blank color screens, and flashing power, it finally looks right again.
oh hey I forgot how catchy the password screen theme was, for something so short.

Died twice on 7-4, arrow maze with a skull. easy to get discombobulated at the end. Died once on 8-3, misplaced an emerald framer (probably my favorite block puzzle in the game, now that I think about it, having to push it that extra half step so that you block the other one's upward line of sight is awesome)

Floor 9, 10 stages to go

Died twice on 10-2 (easy to mess up with a leaper). Died once on 10-4 (pretty stressful stage when it comes to playing chicken with the Don Medusa, but...)

10-5 is a bit of a hoot, with the whole bridge of gols. Makes a nice harrowing experience to end it.

Game beaten: Adventures of Lolo

Now, this was clearly a replay, but... it still shines through as one of those NES games worth completing. Puzzles aren't luck-based, or archaic, everything has clearly defined, simple rules. I especially appreciate how Gols and Skulls only "wake up" once the last heart is taken, as that gives you something to mitigate and predict in advance. Sometimes you can outrun them... and often, you can trap them or just avoid them altogether.

Trails in the sky isn't done downloading just yet, but it's far closer than it was when I started.

The NES cartridges are upside down on the titles above so that when I push them around to get a game, I can see the picture on the front of the cartridge.

but yeah I should have clearly taken my picture in a different orientation. >_>

Anyway, based on (nearly majority demand) Trails in the Sky is next. I know this is a long RPG... and that's about it.

It's an old school RPG with an extremely fleshed out setting and characters. Like, much more so than normal RPGs. Even a lot of the random townspeople NPCs are given unique personalities and dialogue that change as you go through the game.

The story isn't OMGAWESOMEWTF tier but its executed very well because of how personal it ends up feeling due to the way the series handles its characters.
