Honestly, even with that caveat you have to be pretty neutral on slavery to let "families sticking together" trump that, especially without making any attempt to quantify it.

It's sort of like if you said the last time Germany was great was during World War II, despite the Holocaust, because people really had a sense of national pride.

Ignore the supposed "outrage" for a moment. Saying "America was great back in the 1800s because family unity was stronger" is suggesting that slavery is not a large enough issue to reflect negatively on the country as a whole.

Why would anybody's mind immediately go to "back when we had slavery" when asked the last time America was great?

Make America Great Again is just a phrase. America was never 100% great. We can, however, take good qualities from previous time periods all while upholding our progress as a nation.

Is America great now? 30 years ago? 50 years ago? There were always negative things going on.
