i mean, in order for switch to stand any chance of outselling the ps4 this gen, the ps4 would have to stop selling, and stay that way for a year or two.

i mean, wishful thinking, but it's just not going to happen.

like, the switch's lifetime number miiiight surpass the ps4's in, say... a decade?

Im not disagreeing, I believe this gen is Sonys to lose, and would take a pretty hard stumble on their part to lose their momentum. Just making the point that nothing is certain.

Depends on how long it takes for each to be replaced by a new model. I think PS4 will win but Switch is also on pace for some huge numbers already.

why does it matter which one sells more? I never really understood that. only thing that really matters in the long run. is will it sell enough to be profitable.

plenty calm. just wish someone could actually explain that to me. to this day no one ever has, and i've asked more than once in multiple places. usually I get a few people who agree, but the rest ignore me and keep arguing among themselves. fact they won't even entertain my question gives me the impression they have nothing other than it makes them feel better about their purchase.

I dont get gamers and generations. Wouldn't the Switch be a new generation start as the Wii U was the last one?

Nintendo dropped out of the "race" when they released the Wii.
Now they're just selling consoles. not bound by "generations" and minimum technical specs. The wii was up against the PS2, not the PS3. The WiiU was up against people who thought it was a black Wii. And the switch is just trying to sell a lot. It's in competition with the PS4 and the xbox1, but not more so than it is in competition with pc games, and mobile games. And other toys.
I hope it sells a lot. But most people aren't choosing between a PS4 OR a switch. They're different consoles, with different games. I bought both.

This generation is like 3 or 4 years away from being over anyway. Next e3 will probably have Sony, Microsoft, or both making an announcement on the next gen

Did the PS3 finally surpass the 360? I guess the last numbers I saw, the 360 still had more total sales. When were the most recent sales for those two last updated? I would be curious to see the outcome.

According to that, PS3 has outsold 360 by 1M units. Not sure how accurate that site is, though. And even if it is, 1M isnt a complete trouncing of Microsoft.

I'm guessing that developers will go out of their way to make games compatible for a system they see is doing well because the games will sell.
I can also see how it would be important to agree on a system amongst friends if everyone plays online a lot together, because I don't think the Playstation and XBOX networks are compatible in terms of playing games online.
Other than that I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Thanks! Yeah, interesting site. I can't comment on the PS3 and 360 sales data, but I think their Atari 2600 is off by at least three million. I usually post more on AtariAge, and some of the actual Atari historians and ex-employees post quite extensively there...they always quote a smidge over 30 million for the 2600. But yeah, good graph for the general visualization of it all!

Assuming youre speaking toward the race for better graphics, Id counter they were never interested in being in that race to begin with. Nintendo has thrived for years doing their own thing, without stressing graphical fidelity foremost.

Wrong. Even if youre including handhelds under the term console, Nintendos first-party development is arguably the strongest in the industry. Theyre selling games, among other things. Unless Im taking this particular quote too literal, its flat wrong.

Wrong. Nintendo wasnt trying to compete on graphics alone. They were trying to deliver their own unique experience to consumers.
