It's the right thing to do. It's ridiculous that people can criticize the US for backing Israel's 50 year old claim to the city but it's totally reasonable that Turkey is hosting a 57 muslim nation Arab "summit" to decide how they should collectively "deal" with the situation.

Then I don't understand why people are taking issue with Trump's statement. Are we seriously expected to believe that the best course of action is to just pretend perpetually that a two state solution is even possible, and that the last 40 years of negotiations are inching closer to a real resolution? The US knows all too well exactly what happens when you wait to protect your allies from this exact kind of thing, and at some point we need to stop pretending and start dealing with reality.

The core premise of criticism around this is that Trump is riling up anti-Semites in the region by acknowledging that the jews have a valid claim to the holy city. It is 100% being upset at the wrong person for the wrong issue, because it's very easy to criticize a single person than acknowledge that MOST of the middle east has a genocidal hatred of Jews.

It is pretty telling that the anger is being directed at the man who acknowledged that a city is Israel is a part of Israel, and not the hundreds of millions of people whose goal was to reclaim Jerusalem as a Muslim capital for Palestine after successfully completing a second Holocaust of the Jewish people.

The tl;dr is that during Muhammad's conquest of the middle east he was attacked and had to defend himself. There was a nearby series of Jewish tribes that had allied themselves with Muhammad, but rather than come to his defense they chose not to act. He considered that a major betrayal and he spent the next few years wiping every one of those tribes out. From that point on, Jews were basically declared as traitors of the prophet, and the rest is history.

EDIT: Also, the quran doesn't allow muslim bankers to charge interest. Jews have no such law, so jewish loans to muslims traditionally have interest like any other loan. This has led to the perception that Jews are manipulative and/or greedy. It's the same logic Germany used to justify targetting the jews in WW2 (They claimed jewish bankers hoarding money and charging interest were the reasons recovery post-WW1 was so slow).

He's likely referencing Muslim groups that have aligned themselves with the left because they protection as a minority, even though the vast majority of islam's opinions on things like gay rights, religious equality, etc are completely contrary to every other liberal position. They'e conservatives in liberal clothes in nearly every major leftist social issue.
