I never have. I typically change jobs for upward career mobility.

There is a job here that pays roughly 12% more than my current job, though, and it is guaranteed for longer (longer grant cycle than my current position)

the problem, though, is that I am in the middle of several projects in my current role. would that look bad for me to be trying to switch positions like that?

Just apply but let them know you're concerned with current projects and that you'd help with transitioning someone else into your current role if needed.

Most of the time corps will just put that responsibility on your current manager and you'll be transferred out

You should be fine. Applying simply puts you for consideration, so once you're done with your projects, your name is already on the list for that other job.

This. If anything it favors you tbh.

If you get the position they might ask you to finish the projects or work with them to ween in a replacement but you'll still have locked in the promo.
