I made two characters that started with 3 in bladed weapons, but they still have sub-50% hit rates on bunnies and stuff.

Assault rifles are the best weapon class

Avoid heavy armor because of the movement penalties

Most followers are pretty mediocre in terms of skill and stat distribution, but you gotta make due with what you get

When building a class initiative is the most important stat (I think, it's been some time), ignore luck

Intelligence should only have 3 values: 1, 4, 10 (or 9, forget which). Any points in between those are wasted.

Out of the social skills, hard ass can be ignored because a few instances it can end up making things worse. Sweet ass and smart ass are more worthwhile.

The game will tell you this but there are times where there's no good outcomes, only less terrible results

Don't make any characters stat dumps. It might seem smart to make one guy a little worse off in everything to have them be really high in charisma and be your "leader," but all that does is give you a sack to lug around.

Diversify your ammo types so you don't end up with a bullet famine early on and no money to buy more.

oh yeah, this too

make sure everyone is competent in at least one weapon skill

combat plays a big role in the game and you can't talk monsters to death

I can't make a Gafgarion build without heavy armor, blade proficiency and Hardass, though.

Yeah, I did that immediately. Luckily the game gives you starting weapons based off proficiency, so there was no real slip-ups. (Well, other than the medic starting with a stick, but she wasn't meant to be a combat specialist anyway.) I didn't realize ever enemy could move 23423423 spaces per round, though, so that wasn't a brilliant idea.

As long as you give your team different weapons, you shouldn't have much trouble with ammo since the game gives you a big variety in drops and enough money to buy anything you run short on. Definitely make at least 1 assault rifle peep since the NPC selection using assault rifles is next to nonexistent

Most fights won't last beyond 2 rounds or so, so having first turn advantage by stacking up Combat Initiative goes a long way (I don't think any of my characters started with less than 6 speed)

Specialize each character in around 2-5 skills (1 weapon and 1-3 utility skills) depending on intelligence level. I made 3 characters with 4 int, 3 skills each, and one with 8 int, 4 skills on her. You can spread it around a bit if you need more utility but companions can usually fill your holes.

edit: I stat dumped luck on all my characters with no regrets. Cha can also be dumped unless you want 1 person for that leadership bonus

I made my medic have one proficiency in all the noncombat skills, IIRC, plus medic stuff.

Before you start combat set up your troops in cover if possible.
Crouching increasing accuracy.

I've been running around solo to trigger exploding plants, but hadn't really thought about doing it pre-battle -- good idea. Crouching, too, is something I was aware of but somehow forgot about.

Toaster repair is useless, senseless, and deserves no points in any of your characters.

I never found melee tanks of much use either. I'd rather have a 2nd sniper.

Yeah, sniping was pretty good in the short time I used it. I'd make a four-sniper team if I thought it wouldn't be weird and lopsided. Anyway, I restarted and'll see if I can do things properly this time. (As in, not make the medic wholly focused on skills and have zero combat capabilities, lmao.)

PS: I want to dig up Ace's grave if I can get away with it.

I mean, you can make one character a non-combat skill monkey with 10 intelligence and 10 charisma, but generally it's just easier to spread the points around throughout the team.

An intelligence of 1, 4, 8, 10, gives you 2, 3, 4, 5 skill points per level up, respectively.

I played through the first half with a near topped out toaster repair character and got nothing even close to something of value. It irritated me so much that he never returned to my party.

In the first area you're sent to find signal repeaters or something, there's a cave with a toaster. I got a spray paint can for the dude back at Ranger HQ and he gave a book that taught +1 Brawling. (I didn't use it, but I assume it's permanent, a la New Vegas.) So, based solely on that, I was okay with having the skill. Maybe the skill sucks later on or somethin'.

Got all the way back to the exploding plant building. Should have an easier time now that my snoipah can potshot some of the annoying things. Not sure what I'm gonna do about the 3-4 dudes all trapped by exploding. Sadly, Gafgarion v2 doesn't have any blade proficiency.

BTW, are there any places where you can get free healing? Or am I doomed to be in "grabbin' pillz" mode and doing it 10-12 CON apiece?

There's doctors in every town in the game that will heal you for a price, and once you've been allowed into the citadel, you can heal there for free.
