the kids all grown up and living their own adult lives....it's not some one off thing it's just something that the simpsons crew keeps bringing up

as if Matt Groening is secretly pitching a simpsons later years series but fox didn't greenlight it so he's just sneaking in episodes from his failed idea into the series

1) It's not that many. Consider how many episodes the Simpsons have had so far.

2) The future depictions are often different and a lot of it is done for comedic effect. The idea that it's somehow a backdoor pilot for a new show seems highly unlikely.

3) Why are so many of your topics terrible?

sometimes I wonder what it would be like if the show had just let time go by in real time, parralel to the real world. there was a comic strip like that. I can't remember the name but the characters aged in real time. it was the one where the youngest daughter was drowning and her dog gave it's life to save her....if anyone remembers that.

anyway, imagine if the characters had aged from the beginning. Bart, Lisa and Maggie would all be adults. Grandpa Simpson would most surely be dead. and Mr Burns too maybe. or maybe just for a joke he would be immortal. he sortof is supposed to be anyway

I've never liked the idea of a 1:1 parallel with the real world given that seasons are pretty short and because you wouldn't necessarily span a meaningful of time. More generally, though, I have liked the idea of characters growing up and having their roles replaced by new characters. Something like a show which starts with a character as a boy and ends with him dying as a grandfather.

How fast would you want the characters to grow?

Probably have a few seasons with them at a certain age or time in their life then do a time skip where things jump forward a few years. It'd also be a bit more practical in terms of the all-around cast since you wouldn't need to introduce a bunch of new teachers and students each year/season. Or, for a shorter show, you'd probably need to time-skip more often.

A bunch of shows I watch do 1:1 -- like Supernatural -- with the off-seasons effectively acting as time-skips where time passes and various incidental events occur then the first episode of a new season summarizes changes. I've never liked that handling. I'd rather see fuzzy time where the events all look back-to-back but you assume that time passes between episodes.

@Zeus That's a pretty interesting idea. I could see it working pretty well.
