I saw that. It reminded me of that Unsolved Mysteries episode on Prime about this poor family (because the dad gambled a lot) that lived in an old bus until it was bet away in a poker game... the kids went up for adoption (it was an adult reunion story).

A whale, in the context of gaming, is a unique type of gamer who will spend significant amounts of money on ingame cash shops and/or microtransactions. These features don't usually make the publisher any significant amounts of revenue from the regular player base, with the median player spending around $5~10, "whales" account for more than half of a game's cash shop revenue.

As such, "whaling" is considered to be the goal of cash shop design.

People just like to use fishing terms to refer to stuff. You can work hard and long to catch a whole lof little fish to fill your boat. But if you catch just a few whales you've hit the jackpot and they make up for all those little fish that you couldn't catch. Speaking of jackpots... the gambling industry loves to use the whale/little fish terms to refer to their suckers.

It's the same principal behind viral videos. Not all people share the same way. Some people don't share, some people share a little bit, but there's a special kind of person who just shares stuff to EVERYONE
