I don't expect them to, but I expect that they will. And still, despite my not asking for anything (or even knowing for myself what I might want), they usually find me something that I really enjoy.

kinda wish It'd stop though, that money spent on me could've made a difference for the giver

Nope, don't get me anything and I'll do the same and spend the money and get myself something I either really need or want that I'm guaranteed to like.

A year or so back, I told family that I didn't really want anything for my birthday or Christmas as I pretty much had everything I needed and would rather that money be used elsewhere.

I still got gifts.

I usually just say giftcards and socks.

Nah. I'm 30 with a wife and kids. Perpetually in a state of just wanting to make sure they're happy with what they got. My present's being able to provide for them.

I don't expect it but there's a lot of people that feel obligated or that are just so full of the xmas spirit they can't help but get some of it on you.
Also, secret santa, usually arranged by the above types of annoying people.

Expect it? No. Appreciate it when they do? Yes. I enjoy shopping for them too.

That's more or less why I told everyone I know to stop buying me things years ago (and vice versa).

I stopped caring about Christmas when I was still a teenager, and I'm 40 now. I'd much rather the people I know save their money rather than dealing with the hassle of trying to buy me something I probably won't like anyway, but will then have to pretend to like out of politeness. My gift to you is the time, money, and effort you save not buying me a gift, while your gift to me is not having to fake appreciation and having to reciprocate because "it's expected" (or to have to delay my own gratification because you bought me something for Christmas months ago and then told me you don't want me to buy it for myself until then, which is a phase I went through with my GF years ago, and one I know other people have had to deal with with their spouses now and then).

For people who say "But I just want to show my affection" or some other reason why they consider gift-giving "necessary", if you want to give me a gift, just try not to be a shit for the other 364 days in a given year.

Honestly, if I see something I think a friend would want/need and want to give it as a gift, I'd rather not wait until an arbitrary day to do it. I just pick stuff up for them or do them favors whenever, and they do the same for me. That way, it actually feels like an act of friendship and appreciation, and not a stupid social obligation rooted in a religion I stopped believing in before I went through puberty.

I'd probably feel differently if I had kids, but I don't, so I don't.

I don't expect it but I'll appreciate it nonetheless. My closest high school friends and I have been doing secret Santa gift exchanges for the past few years. The thing about receiving gifts is you sometimes end up with something you don't need and now feel obligated to keep despite it ending up collecting dust somewhere.

As an example, one of my Scouts gave me a good Leatherman multi-tool last year for Oseibo but I already have my own Leatherman. So I currently have his Leatherman sitting in my car as a backup. However his Leatherman is much smaller and lighter which is probably a good thing if weight is a concern.

Yes, because I have family and friends who exchange gifts. While it's likely I'd still give gifts even when I didn't receive them, most people seem to give them.
