Lots of sex with Natalie Dormer, as well as other lovely ladies. Wonderful costumes, sets, and designs, if you're into that sort of thing. It's not historically accurate, very loose like most for-entertainment shows are, but still enjoyable nontheless. It drags at the end but the first 2, 2.5 seasons are pretty good. A lot of shocking things if you don't know the history, which I advise you only look up after watching the show since knowing what actually happened might ruin how inaccurate some of the stuff is.

All in all, a fun watch, a pre Game of Thrones show you could say minus the dragons.

Yeah it was pretty good. Natalie Dormer was definitely the best of the bunch, she stole the screen everytime she was on it. One of the few shows I've seen where you can't stand the main character but his antics basically fuel the plot.

If you liked The Tudors and haven't seen it yet, I'd recommend The Borgias. Same showrunner iirc, except the main cast is much more likeable. Only three seasons, though.

And as a bonus second rec, if you can separate awful character (King Henry) from awesome actor (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers), then check out the one season of Dracula from NBC. That show was super bad ass.

Yeah I hate him, but the weird kind of hate where I still want to continue the show and watch his antics, hypocrisy and how cruel he may be especially towards his first wife, but also towards his second and beyond. I think it helps that in the first 2 seasons at least, while the story is about him the show follows the other characters that are trying to manipulate him, which is why after season 2 when the people you are invested in are all killed, you kind of lose interest.

As for other shows I do like the war of the roses which sounds super cool, and I hear a show called white queen and white princess is good.

As to Dracula, while I've never heard of the show I also totally see him for the role. Also if there was ever a picture of dorian grey adaptation, I'd be fine with him playing the part as well.

Damn, that's a good call. There's not much that could call me back to TV these days but I'd tune in to him as Dorian Grey. It'd be a great mini-series.

On that note, the only other thing I've seen him in was a mini where he played Elvis. I'd highly recommend that one too, it's probably the most honest and somewhat depressing portrayal of someone who too often gets stylized as leading a purely happy life.

Couldn't get into it. Felt like a high budget soap opera.

High budget yes, but not sure what soap opera is. Plus it's only 4 seasons at 10ish episodes after all.

Soap operas are daytime television shows which involve unnecessary drama and scheming by the characters. The stories are often washed and reused, hence the term soap opera.

Hmm I see. Well it's based on real life so...

It's kinda interesting to see all the different elements of the past, like how important religion was. Christianity, or rather Catholicism was a big thing back then and this was the time period where the king separated from the church pope in rome and did his own church of england, something called a reform, which I'm told is basically what is now protestant. It's a large part of the show and to a non religion person like me very entertaining to see. Plus I'll admit there's a lot of titillation since it's a showtime series after all.

Loved the show but yeah it does kind of drag on at the end considering the content of the first couple of seasons. Is Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in anything else note worthy? I saw Dracula recommended above so I might check that out. I know he was struggling with addiction for a while but I think he's a fun actor to watch.

I've been meaning to watch this for years now. Do you consider it better than The Tudors?

Sam Neill was straight up terrific. Really liked him. Sad about his end. I was honestly straight up surprised.

This show is also just amazing in how one character that plots another character's downfall, is in turn having their downfall plotted by another character, and this cycle just kind of goes on until the end of the show.

It's like, Charles Brandon is the only one who makes it out of the old cast.

Also yeah can't believe I forgot to mention this, Henry Cavill is in this show! Not only that... he's actually likable! Because of those terrible you-know-what movies, I had no idea that he was actually extremely likable, but this show not only shows how likable he is despite flaws but also how charming and insanely good looking he is.

Another nice coincidence is that Callum Blue was in season 1 (he plays Zod in season 9 of Smallville)

@ShadowElite86

Yeah, personally I liked Borgias better. Jeremy Irons acts every scene like a champ, there's more action to balance the intrigue and it's not really weighed down by any "Great Matter" like the first bit of The Tudors was. The only problem is that it got canned early and so lacks a satisfactory conclusion.

@saspa

Seeing Supes and Zod on the same screen for that season was hilarious. Charles sorta got on my nerves at first but his growth as a character was fantastic. Him and Henry as old men is probably my favorite scene from the show.

Yeah he was a bit of an ass in season 1 who I couldn't help but keep watching in spite of myself, and then when he starts growing up and being more adult it really made me sympathize with him, similar to how he sympathized with characters' misfortunes like catherine of aragon.
