good. nice beat and i liked all of the verses (i'd agree with snake that nas had the best one). also, i have a thing for "pass the mic" hip hop songs - probably why i favor hip hop ensembles. like, the fugees, digable planets and jurassic 5 would all make my top 5 hip hop acts.

i wasn't a fan of this. loved it at first but then they did a bunch of stuff i mostly didn't care for and i ended up getting rather bored because of the length. if they'd stopped playing at the 1:50 mark this would have been a great piece but as it is... nah.

(also wtf, according to the credits the musicians who appear in the video aren't exactly the same as the ones who play on the track?? what is this, the milli vanilli of contemporary classical music?)

i like the white stripes but i don't like jolene so that doesn't help. i'd rather listen to this than the original version, but there's only so much they can do with this song. (it kind of reminded me of nirvana's version of where did you sleep last night.)

Gin Wigmore - Kill of the Night
Sometimes I like this woman's voice and sometimes I really don't. The louder she gets, the more I dislike the voice. It is almost something I enjoy immensely. But it's not quite there for me, the little bit that tips over the edge to annoying breaks the entire song for me. I'd like it completely otherwise.

Mobb Deep (ft. Nas & Raekwon) - Eye for a Eye (Your Beef is Mines)
Ah, Nas, one of the best rappers to ever blow up for one second and then do nothing of note after that. This is a great song, good beat, good guest spots, good everything. I like it.

Andy Akiho - NO one To kNOW one
Parts of this feel like music, which is a plus, but eventually it tries way hard to be unique and random and I really don't like it. It doesn't feel very Halloween-y to me, either.

Sorority Noise - A Portrait Of
I'm really glad music kicked in because I thought the first few seconds was going to be the whole song. I like a lot of talky singers, guys like the singer from Cake and The Mountain Goats, and I feel like this guy is trying to do that to an extent, but it doesn't really do it for me. I guess it falls short when the music accompanying is pretty standard alt rock.

N-qia - Shootingstar
I actually like this a good amount ... it's not really in my wheel house but it sounds nice. I feel like it would be better without the dreamy vocals at all, however. If the whole song sounded closer to the breakdown around 2:30, I'd be super into it.

Andy Shauf - The Magician
This is really fantastic. I've never really heard Andy Shauf before, but I'm getting some Sean Lennon vibes, and some others, but that one is the most prominent. There's someone else too, but I can't quite figure out who and it's driving me crazy. These are dreamy vocals done right, and the music all around it is put together extremely well. I will be listening to this again.

The White Stripes - Jolene (Dolly Parton Cover)
The original is definitely one of the best country songs of all time. I really don't like this though ... he's perfectly capable of singing the song in his style without missing like half of the consonant sounds, I don't really get the style choice here. I can see why someone might think this is extremely powerful and filled with emotion, but it doesn't do it for me.

Dream Theater - Honor Thy Father
I'm definitely not going to give you 10 minutes worth of writeups, but I'll listen to Dream Theater any day. This isn't my favorite song by hem, but it's still very good. The drums are the standout, as far as I'm concerned. Good stuff.

The Move - I Can Hear The Grass Grow
Hey, my dad used to listen to this band a lot. They were never as big over here, but I am pretty familiar with this song. I like it a lot. Just really great late 60s psychedelic pop.

Joey Bada$$ - Y U DON'T LOVE ME?
You know what, I've listened to Joey Bada$$ several times and every time I couldn't quite place who he reminds me of, and now I know: he reminds me of good KiD CuDi -- aka mixtape CuDi. This song, especially. Great flow, wish it went a bit harder.

Mastodon Blue Walsh
Hey, I heard this pretty recently ... that's because it's new, right? There's a lot of chill Mastodon in this track, and while chill Mastodon isn't my favorite Mastodon, it's still very good. The transition at 3:00 is dope and I really don't have a lot more to say about it except <3 Mastodon

Kill Of The Night - catchy, good voice. Especially when she's singing saying kill of the night.

No One To Know One - I actually kinda dig the girl's vocals and then when it goes into 4/5 then 3/2, 3/2, 2/3, 6666666666, 4/10, 929292929292929292929292929292929292929292

Jolene - pretty much anything jack white does is great for me, and Jolene is a flawless song in like any iteration it's in. So boom, instant greatness.

Of A Portrait - really, really good lyrics. Really sad but really good. Honestly surprised someone not me nominated a song like this. Good job.

Shootingstar - pleasant listening, nice browsing music

The Magician- super nifty, I especially like the last half of it.

He Said He Has A Story- there's a certain sing song nature with beats like this that I absolutely love, and this song does it. And The Dear Hunter always tells a cool story, this one being one of the darker ones.

Honor Thy Father- I'm not the biggest fan of dream theater but this was actually quite cool. I think I prefer it when they lean in a more metal direction and get to the nitty gritty. Parts in the middle bordered on being kind of superfluous but it didn't quite cross that so it's fine. Cool stuff.

I Can Hear The Grass Grow- has a real good melody, and sort of psychedelic feel.

Y U DON'T LOVE ME? - really good album, really good message. Joey has a nice flow.

Blue Walsh- I like my Mastodon with a bit more energy but they still do mellow well since they're such a great band.

Eye for a Eye - Song just kind of...goes? Same beat the whole way through and it just brings in a two note riff every now and then. The rapping is fine, but there just isn't enough to interest me.
Kill of the Night - Enjoyable beat, I like female vocals a lot. Kind of a slow start, but really gets going a little ways in. Good guitar.
NO one To kNOW one - Very interesting rhythms to be honest, doesn't seems just completely random (all the time). I like the dissonance without it being just just horrible to listen to. I could've done without the weird speaking parts though and it kind of drags at points.
A Portrait Of - Very nice and mellow song. Not sure what else I have to say, just a good song to listen to.
Shootingstar - What a relaxing song to listen to. I could imagine putting this on a sleep mix or something, soft vocals that are nice to listen to and nice music overall. I enjoyed this one a lot!
The Magician - Another mellow song, kind of on a roll here. Kind of in the same vein as A Portrait Of, nothing against it but not much for me to talk about.
He Said He Had a Story - Now this is my kind of song. Reminds me a little of some Panic! At the Disco at points. I like the different sections, alternating between a more subdued section to a more upbeat. Also, the brass was pretty nice, even if in the background.
I Can Hear the Grass Grow - Very 60s UK rock. *wikipedias* Yep, ok. The interesting part to me is the very deep voice that is used occassionally. I don't know if I've heard that too often in this style of music. I enjoyed it though!
Y U DON'T LOVE ME? - This was a very good song to listen to! I liked the rhythm and the flow of the lyrics. I really don't have the experience to have much more critique than this, but I liked it.
Blue Walsh - I'm running out of ways to say I like songs. But this was another song I just generally enjoyed. I think I need to listen to more Mastodon, as they seem right up my alley, but I think I got turned off them for some reason? Maybe I'm getting them confused with another band.
Jolene - Man he sure manages to get the emotion in his singing on this one huh? It's a fun cover to be sure!

[1ST] Andy Akiho - NO one To kNOW one
Love the percussion in this. The dark string/piano, light woodwind trade-off at around 2:15 is really cool, sounds like a film score. I love the concert snare's gradual acceleration shortly after that that gets repeated later - reminds me of shit we used to do in high school drumline. The beat that starts just before the 4-minute mark is really groovy, and the brooding cello(?) really sets the mood. I think I'd prefer the vocals just stay out of it....though I guess it gets enough of an instrumental break. Then you get steel drums on top of everything else haha. Fivelets are neat at ~6:13. Overall it's very interesting, there's a great push and pull of tension.

[2nd] The Dear Hunter - He Said He Had A Story
The vocals border on too emo for me, but it's a cool song. That low synth brass that acts as the bass is excellent. This would be fun to drum to.

[3rd] Mastodon - Blue Walsh
Really good drumming - I like that 16th hi-hat groove, right in the pocket. Also has some interesting guitar patterns.

Andy Shauf - The Magician
Chill. I like the hits on the offbeat toward the end. Reminds me a bit of the superior 'Medusa in Chains'.

Gin Wigmore - Kill of the Night
This is good. Guitar reminds me of Black Keys. Soulful vocals, like those of Amy Winehouse or Alison Mosshart. Also reminds me of "X's and O's".

Dream Theater - Honor Thy Father
I almost always make it a point to listen to every song 3 times, so if you submit one that's 10+ minutes, it'd better cure fucking cancer by listening to it. This is decent at times but not worth near that much of my time. Like I'm almost falling asleep waiting for it to end as I write this. I don't know what the dialogue is from like 5:30-6:30. The best parts are the drums just after 4 minutes and any of the synth instrumentals (like the one at 6:45 is cool). On an average week wouldn't be this high but most of the rest below it are pretty bad.

Joey Bada$$ - Y U DONT LOVE ME?
Had a hard time deciding which was the best rap between this and the next track.

Mobb Deep (ft. Nas & Raekwon) - Eye for a Eye (Your Beef is Mines)
Okay beat & rhymes. Doesn't really stand out, though, and some of the rapping in the verses reminds me of Hannibal Buress' "Morpheus" rap

...which probably isn't good if you're trying to be taken seriously.

Sorority Noise - A Portrait Of
The deadpan vocal delivery is interesting - like eels or Cake, or Tommy Siegel from Jukebox the Ghost. The monologue during the bridge is a little.....cringe. Poetry over music can work (see the end of Elliott Smith's "Coast to Coast"), but in this case it forgoes artistic tact and just goes for raw anger.

The Move - I Can Hear The Grass Grow
Very Beatles, until the bridge when it's very Beach Boys. The opening especially reminds me of And Your Bird Can Sing.

N-qia - Shootingstar
Boy that 'clicking' percussion sure is annoying. The vocals could potentially be calming but not with whatever is going on percussively. I don't know who mixed this & thought that sounded good. Finally when it drops out you get some nice synth organ bops but it's too little too late.

Mr Lasastryke posted...
none of mycro's previous entries were random either. you will see just had an element of randomness in it.

He literally posted a random note generated song.

hence why i said it had "an element of randomness." the other aspects of the song (the vocals, the drumming, etc.) were obviously very deliberate.

but yeah, if you were saying "compared to you will see, no one to know one isn't random" that's a fair enough thing to say. sorry for misreading your post and attacking you.
