Board 8 > Is 2017 the best year for video games since 1998?

We have at least three all-time classics: Persona 5, BOTW, and Odyssey.

Add to the year very good offerings like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Splatoon 2, Wolfenstein 2.

In addition, we have a number of more "niche" like games that exceeded expectations: Tales of Berseria, Nioh, Danganronpa V3, Nier: Automata, Trails the 3rd

Finally, remasters/ports of games: MK8 Deluxe, Trails of Cold Steel 1 & 2.

Point is, there was a lot to be thankful for this year. (For reference, 1998 is forever untouchable: OoT, Metal Gear Solid, FF Tactics, Xenogears, Suikoden II, Mega Man Legends... I could actually go on).

2017 has been amazing, but I don't really hold 98 in such huge regard

1998, 2001, 1999 if you guys played PC games pre steam, 1997 and maybe 2004 were all better.

2017 was better than most years tho so good for it.

Even if you wrongly think that P5 isn't an all-time classic, it's still excellent, which puts this year up near the very pinnacle of gaming.

Apologies for not mentioning the Indies, and for not listing Resident Evil 2 on my first 1998 list. I really don't care about Banjo or Pokemon though, sorry.

Iirc the years right right before the PS4/xbone released were really good

Devs were comfortable developing in the systems finally and could get creative. I remember the year with last of us and BioShock infinite being very good

I haven't played the new Mario yet, so 2017 doesn't stand out to me all that much

This one has an argument. Personally, I really only care about Justice for All, Trials & Tribulations, Portal, and Bioshock. I guess it's also notable for the first installments of Mass Effect and Uncharted though both of them kind of suck compared to their sequels.

Also yeah. Guitar Hero and Rock Band were at peak popularity so make of that what you will.

I'll grant you Witcher 3 and Bloodborne. MGSV needs an ending. Everything else is whatever.

EDIT: Also Rocket League. I'll grant you that one too. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is also good, but yeah, port and NEW 3DS nonsense weakens it.

Persona and P5 in particular appeals to a ton of non-hardcore gamers. That's why the series sells so much and has all those rhythm games and such.

Most classics don't transcend past the "hardcore". Like typical people don't read the Odyssey for fun or listen to Beethoven on a regular basis. That's completely irrelevant to if it's a classic or not

But yeah Persona has that wide appeal so I don't see the argument.
