If a movie is so bad that you know it would bomb at the box office... why even bother making it?

Could be cheapo and people will still buy them, like how some people buy those garbage movies like Transmorphers or some big animal movie like idk Crocodile. Plus like back when video rental stores were still a big thing those places would buy those kind of movies as well.

And think dvd sales are still decent nowadays, although this was few years when Riddick came out, I think it just covered it's expenses with the box office, but they made a good profit off dvd sales since Vin Diesel said they thinking of making another one since Riddick was doing well in that area.

There's also people who make bad movies on purpose for tax reasons.

Zangulus posted...
So theres literally no reason a movie could be made and not put through a theatre outside of the idea of it bombing.

Not one.

Nope.

No... there isn't. They do this when they know it wouldn't make money.

Most people don't want to spend $10 on a movie ticket to see something that doesn't have a lot of hype around it. Conversely, someone sees a $8 DVD on the shelf people might be more inclined to buy it if they need something to watch.

Also, tax write-offs.

Some movies need to be seen on the big screen. Special effects, surround sound, action etc.
And some movies are worth watching but are better watched at home, on the couch, with family, and some homemade snacks.
This also means they can be cheaper made, no need for expensive film, 1080p or 4k is more than good enough.
A lot of family/drama movies are made straight for TV. And if that's not profitable, then maybe DVD.
There's also documentaries. A lot of people want to watch those, but they're special interest. Not something to watch with friends on a night out.

Of course there are also the money grabs, like the extremely cheaply made disaster movies that are horrible. Or the fake popular (disney) movies like tarzan or pocahontas.

The movies are usually very low budget so they don't have to make all that much to turn a profit.

A good deal of them are also considered "tie in films". They'll have a similar title or be a similar genre to a highly anticipated film. People will buy or rent the movie to see something similar or because they get mixed up and confuse the two.
