First why are people making this a right vs left issue? From what I've seen it's an old and easily manipulated vs people that use the internet issue.

Anyways did you guys here about Comcast New movie service? It's like a shitty Netflix with ads but it only costs 5 a month.

I probably would have stated with Netflix but Comcast has throttled the shit out of Netflix so it buffers every 20 seconds.

Anyone who wants to repeal net neutrality is dulusional and I hope they're phone company starts charging them extra to call their mom.

This is the point you should've started with, before repeatedly moving those goalposts. It's not a great one, but at least it's an easier point to defend than those other disasters.

So graphics like that aren't saying that's what will happen. It's just saying there's nothing stopping that from ever happening. I would hope ISPs wouldn't be dumb enough to ever try that.

But yeah I'm a huge supporter of net neutrality

What's idealistic here? A major disruption to the current model is bad for business. Cable companies are happy to have you mindlessly send them your $50-70/month for Internet and never have you question your purchase choices. The opportunity here is for them to charge more to people who cost them more, which is the handful of people who consume excessive amounts of bandwidth.

You're being idealistic in suggesting that the ISPs want to be able to charge you less. That's demonstrably false. They already have the opportunity to do this. They aren't going to lose out on profits for any reason. That's never how it shakes out for the corporations. They are in this to drive profits, and rightly so. But that comes at a cost to us. And they are never looking to save you money.

You claim they can charge the people that use more bandwidth more money. They literally already do this with caps. They throttle during peak hours, and put data caps on customers. And when you go over the cap they charge by the GB.

It is most certainly being idealistic and downright naive to think they are doing this to save you money.

Lol @ paying for Netflix

Lol @ Mark Zuckerberg charging for Facebook

Should've inb4'd seeing as it's not hard for people to miss the point

The point is, it's not about Facebook or Netflix specifically. It's about whatever sites that are your own versions of FB/Netflix (like say you use Reddit and Hulu as much as someone uses Facebook and Netflix).

The point is, replace Facebook with Reddit (or, again, whatever you personally use most) and pretend you're getting charged an extra $9/mo for that site specifically.

Get off the internet then and live your life then. This is not the end of the world like people are trying to make it out to be.

It's also not a positive like a bunch of people are trying to make it out to be. Only an idiot would use your reasoning for your position.

Edit: as for the other post I'm glad you don't care about increasing rates for NO REASON but most of us do. Not surprising since you support a party that pisses away money on frivolous or downright idiotic things.

It's like I said to the vast majority of people in the country it will be nothing more than a minor nuisance when their internet bill goes up like 20 dollars a month. Even if that's the case it will still be a far better deal than what cable is when it's like 120+ dollars a month for a vast majority of channels you never watch.

How will this work with internet privacy? Like, will this change companies' ability to do as they want with your internet browsing habits (i.e. search histories, spending habits). I know there is already some liberties with that now. But would the end of net neutrality impact this in any way?

Why are you comparing this to cable? No sane person is still defending those ridiculous rates for so few channels (the contents of which can easily be found online and on-demand for 10% the rate)

It's like I said I'm not trying to defend it as if it's a good thing. If anything it sucks, but it's not at all a doomsday scenario. It's just not something to even be upset about for more than a few minutes. Like oh crap they're raising my rent 20$ after my lease is up. Yeah it sucks but it's not gonna change your life in any tangible way to pay with that extra 20$ a month.

And if you can't have that attitude about it then you don't fucking need it. There's almost zero actual value that's added to your life today from having home internet access. Anything that you need to use the internet for, you can do for free at thousands of free wifi spots all over the country.

Go to a local library. The internet is not going to become too expensive for every free location to just get shut down over night.

At least you understand that you created a strawman to attack. No one here said the sky is falling. Plus an ISP wouldnt actually do that because on average theyd take in less money for the same bandwidth usage.

Would be more like pay X and access our sites plus a bunch of low bandwidth usage ones. Pay extra to access things like Netflix, Crunchyroll, use your internet for gaming, and access any competing sites.

You know, I think you're right when you say that picture isn't painting the whole picture. Mainly because that's about the best case scenario.

The "video" section, instead of being 17.99, could break down even further, to $5 for netflix, $5 for Hulu, $5 for HBO, $5 for youtube, $5 for Amazon prime streaming...oh and that doesn't even include the respective monthly rates incurred by each of those sites' respective charges. Those additional $5 are just for access to those sites.
