Does Verizon or Spectrum want to throttle your Netflix and charge you a fee for using it on their lines?

You bet they do! And now it's legal!

Sure. I'm quite certain my Internet bill would be much lower under the a la carte model. I cancelled my cable TV subscription because I got tired of paying for 1,000 channels of shit when I really only wanted 25 or so, so the idea of customizing what I pay for seems fine to me.

it would be really unlikely to lower your bill since it would cost them more to restrict your access than it does to let you access whatever. Youd likely pay the same but have to pay extra to access certain types of sites unless they are affiliated with your isp.

What's idealistic here? A major disruption to the current model is bad for business. Cable companies are happy to have you mindlessly send them your $50-70/month for Internet and never have you question your purchase choices. The opportunity here is for them to charge more to people who cost them more, which is the handful of people who consume excessive amounts of bandwidth.

Actually, it's designed to make it extremely difficult to restore the internet to the status quo or give it's oversight over to a federal agency. For all intents and purposes, these changes will be permanent. They were specifically drafted that way.

Thinking that's the worst that will happen is pretty damn idealistic. I'm not saying it's gonna be worse but I'm sure as hell not pretending the companies are gonna use this to be fair like you're suggesting.

Furthermore if it was an issue with the left you would be going out of your way to describe every fallacy in the book as evidence it was a bad move by the left.

I'm not sure this is a good example. I'll still be paying the same price.

The problem arises when they feel like categorizing even further than that. Like instead of "video" being one category, it'll break down further into "pay $5/mo for youtube, 5 for Netflix, 5 for Hulu, 5 for porn, 5 for HBO," etc

And that's why they added "facebook" and "netflix" in red there -- to illustrate that possibility. When you add those two in, your rate is indeed higher than it would be.

To be honest, I think the focus on charts like the above is to ignore many of the wider issues around net neutrality.

For example, ISPs won't just be able to charge you more, but they'll be able to modify speeds and even modify the data in transit. On speeds, this will allow them to favor their own services over their competitors and to essentially freeze out new entrants to the market who can't afford to pay for preferential speeds. Even a small difference in speeds affects the sites people go to. On the data itself, this allows them to add trackers, spyware, etc. and potentially remove certain layers of encryption, making the internet less safe to use.

There's also the issue of the infrastructure that ISPs control (e.g. pole attachment), where they can prevent new ISPs from entering the market. For all the talk of competition being all that's required (rather than regulation), well, there ain't gonna be much.

I'm probably sounding like a broken record here lol.

anyone who says that they will be paying less on a new model is a goddamn fool.

If they have you paying X dollars, and they choose the price, why the hell woudl they ever charge you less than X dollars for the new model?

People will stay the same at best, they will charge more for most, in all likelihood. there's no reason for them to lower costs when they don't have to.

The point is, it's not about Facebook or Netflix specifically. It's about whatever sites that are your own versions of FB/Netflix (like say you use Reddit and Hulu as much as someone uses Facebook and Netflix).

The point is, replace Facebook with Reddit (or, again, whatever you personally use most) and pretend you're getting charged an extra $9/mo for that site specifically.
