I just heard someone defend Selena Gomez at the amas last night by saying she was not lip-syncing but singing with a backing track, which is why her lips didn't mirror the words. What is the difference?

I might be wrong but I feel like there are things you can pull off in a recording studio (like echo'd lyrics or your own backup vocals) that you can't physically do live.
But... yeah I'm kind of curious, sounds like she was ultimately just lip synching.
