Monday, despite calendars. For most people, school and work start on monday, so I have no idea why calendars start with sunday.

So calendars were invented after the creation of the Mon-Fri work week?

Pretty sure calendars were invented before the seven day week. What does that matter though?

Calendars were actually invented before days, they were just repurposed since the number of boxes lined up perfectly and there were so many just lying around

Is it actually "officially" Sunday? It's a meaningless distinction, really, but Monday certainly feels like the first day of the week.

Depends what week we are talking about. I mean I consider the start of a work/school week to be Monday as that's when most folk go to school/work for another week plus Sunday is a "day of rest" and that doesn't make sense at the start of a week also Saturday and Sunday are both the weekend so the clue is in the name. I however class the start of the general week to be Sunday as my calendar says. Voted Monday though as that has more reasoning behind it in general.

Monday, which is officially the first day of the week.
It's an international standard defined by ISO 8601 and NEN 2772.

It's also the start of the working/school week.
Sunday is the last day, hence why it's part of the weekEND.
If Sunday was the first day, you'd start the week with half of the weekend.

Some calendars start with Sunday. Luckily there's not many of them. I always steer clear of those. I've had one in the past, it was confusing for a whole year.

Your poll explanation is kinda biased. You already tell people what to fill in by telling them one option is sometimes considered and the other option is official.

NB other days are sometimes used as first day in religions, like Saturday in Islam and Sunday in Christianity.

To be fair you could consider "weekend" to have a similar use of "end" as the word "bookend", where it encloses the week.

Still, Monday is the start of the week, except on a calendar.
