It's free if you don't collect the ashes. My brother died like 4 years ago now, and I had the option of paying to collect his ashes (which I didn't take). I did pay to have my Wife cremated and have her ashes on my mantel though.

Now if you have an estate or something it would probably come out of that, but most people don't have one, so yeah, unless you actually have family that wants your ashes for some reason, it would not be a burden on them, and if you do have resources left when you croak it will just come out of that...so....still not a burden (in fact you are probably leaving them money/items etc).

This isnt true everywhere.

What do they do with homeless people who die etc in those areas, just let the bodies sit around and rot?

don't know if they still do it, but ive seen pictures of where they've dug mass graves in the past, basically a giant trench throw a bunch of bodies in and bury it. but that was for the ones that either had no identity they could verify or no one would claim the remains. now to be fair I saw this info a long time ago and my memory could be quite fuzzy on the matter.

Toss me into the woods or whatever. I don't care. I am dead.

pretty much the same. hell it would almost be nice knowing some wild animals got its meal for the day without me having to suffer being ripped apart by them.

The point was not that you, or your family do not pay for it, not that the gov doesn't pay for it, and the tiny amount they do pay would never be noticed compared to all the taxes that are wasted on other crap.

So basically yes, if you don't claim a body, you don't have to pay for it, either the person who died will from their estate if they have one, or the goverment (probably the state actually) will.

As far as I know, there are no places in the US where a funeral home (or hospital that uses one) can go after relatives for cremation expenses unless they have authorized the cremation and or want to receive the ashes.
