Was the cashier within his rights to ask for a different bill?

Somewhere along the way I got a $5 bill someone had defaced with racist bullshit. I tried to use it to pay for something, and the cashier noticed the writing. He said something, I said some asshole had put it there, and then he asked if I had a different $5 bill. I didn't; I had about $10 on me, $5 of which were in singles, and the bill was about $5.50. He took the bill anyway, but he wasn't pleased.

I know people don't want to deal with that stuff (I certainly didn't), but was it ok for the cashier to ask for a different bill? This isn't the first bad bill that someone dumped on me, and I feel for the guy having to handle it, but unless I specifically go to the bank and change it (which is a headache in itself), I don't have any real options for getting rid of it other than spending it.

He has to take it, but just dont give it back to someone as change. Thats just one Facebook post away from online outrage and bad press for the store.

I guess it's fine for him to ask if you have something else, but he'd have no right to refuse to take it, which I'm sure he's aware of since he eventually did accept it.

I was thinking "why would he care?" but this is a good reason I hadn't thought of

I agree with Leon -- it's fine for him to ask for something else, but if you say no, that's the end of it.

That sounds like a pretty uncomfortable situation. If the cashier happened to be one of the ethnicities the bill had a racial slur of I imagine it would've been an even worse scenario. I mean money is money, but I'd feel uncomfortable having a bill like that. I'd probably have just taken it to one of those quarter machines to avoid ever having to use it >_>

Whenever I see weird things written on money, I just scribble it out. Not hard.

I believe he actually does not have to accept the bill, just like stores don't have to accept bills larger than a certain amount. So like he's within his legal rights to deny the bill, but maybe not within his stores policy.

What he did was probably the best thing, I dunno how you're even questioning it. He asked if there was another option, there wasn't, so he took it anyway. If he refused to take it then yea this would be an actual topic worth discussing.

I think the scenario that played out is probably as best as it could've been

I don't think I would've wanted to take that bill in my store but I wouldn't have much choice

Yeah pretty much this.

The biggest issue probably would have been if the next cashier didn't know about it and gave it to a customer without looking/thinking. A lot of stores don't count/clear the drawer after every cashier, just at the end of the day.
