But LotR RotK was a great movie, so a win is deserved.
Lost in Translation was good as well.

The ghost army was easily the worst thing in storytelling history (that I can think of right now). They could've at least referenced it during the opening flashback in Fellowship, so it was foreshadowing rather than an ass-pull. Mass Effect 3's original ending was better.

Blockbusters tend to be popcorn flicks (ie, not known for quality) so you don't often see the highest-earners win best picture, although there are certainly major earners which won best picture. Keep in mind that ***Titanic*** won best picture and that movie cleared billions at the box office at a time when billions were bigger news. A lot of other ones did $200m-500m, which isn't chump change.
