So for the past 2 years almost, I've used Windows 10 exclusively because I do a lot of gaming on my computer now. I bought my high end iMac in late 2013. It was before I switched to PC gaming. Yes, I could have spent the money I used on the iMac to build a great gaming PC, but again, I wasn't too interested in it at the time and I didn't like Windows as much back then.

Anyways, I haven't used my iMac in weeks, but I have it in sleep mode. It'll update itself and all that.

Well, I just noticed a black screen with a circle and a line across it (). I don't know know what it's called. I hope my iMac is not bricked. It may have updated to the newest OSX by itself. But I doubt it considering I set my iMac to boot to Windows everytime I turn it on. Maybe it updated Windows by itself too, which I don't mind at all.

I'm looking into this right now and I really hope it is not bricked. I'm broke right now and can't afford a new PC. It would probably take me months with a part time job to buy a new one.

If it is bricked, I won't buy an iMac anymore. I'll just build my own PC or buy a high end gaming PC. I don't think I'd feel comfortable building my own PC to be honest. The reason why I won't buy an iMac anymore is because I switched to PC gaming, Apple products are ridiculously expensive, and I no longer dislike Windows. I only disliked Windows for a few years and had gotten bored of it.

Any advice? Do you think my iMac is bricked?

tl;dr: My iMac appears to be bricked.

Try to do a single user boot or drive select boot. I dont know the keys offhand. Your hard drive may have died. Though depending on the iMac thats almost as good as a brick.

I did have my MacBook throw that once and it hasnt since.

Thanks. I'll look into it.

My iMac has a Fusion Drive or whatever it's called. Not sure if those are easily replaceable. Even if they are, it'll probably cost a ton of money for it and to get it repaired in a shop. I think the motherboard of an old MacBook Pro I had no longer worked and the shop told me it would cost like $1000 for the repair and part. That's almost as much as I had paid the damn notebook. xD

Yeah, it's an SSD but Apple calls it a Fusion Drive. >.>

I watched a video showing how to replace the HDD and it looks a little complicated. I don't have the tools and I doubt I want to bother going through all of the little steps to replace the HDD.

I still haven't looked into my iMac yet. Maybe this week.

I shut down the iMac and turned it back on just to see what happened. After turning it on, the screen went black and nothing happened. I didn't press any keys to boot to recovery or anything yet.

you have to hold down the option key while you're booting the computer up for it to show the different drives you can boot from, just fyi

hold the option key until it pops up with the drives

new OS should have a built in recovery drive you should be able to try to reinstall your operating system on the mac side and see if that helps

or you can try booting to windows to see if it's actually the computer itself
