From what I understand, these hunting ranches are on private property, so the owners of that property are choosing to use it for housing wildlife when it could otherwise be put to other uses, uses which probably wouldn't allow elephants and other wildlife to roam around. So that's another thing that must be considered, because another effect of these ranches is having more land dedicated (at least somewhat) towards conservation in addition to what is in the country's national parks and other protected wildlife areas.
