Unless youre a redneck with a big ass truck. Then the distance changes to 2 inches. The same size as your penis.

I was taught 3 seconds, but it's all relevant to speed.

At lights my wife always stops a full car length or more behind the next car. It infuriates me.

I always leave tons of space unless it's heavy traffic and we're just coasting.

Good. If anyone rear ends your wife's vehicle she'd be less likely to hit the car in front of her

"If"? You mean "when" , since anyone following her will expect her to get closer to the car in front of her, and not stop so far from it.

You almost have to stay kinda close because if someone sees space they will try to squeeze into it forcing you to slow down.

More people need the experience.

I mean the main key to "don't get hit from behind" is not to come to sudden, jerky stops, regardless of how far you are from the stop light.

You realize that if you're too close to the next car and you get rear-ended and wind up hitting the car in front of you, that that person behind you isn't going to be paying for that car's damages, right?

Dumbass.

Impossible for there to be a middle ground.

Far as I know the fault definitely still lies with the car that caused the accident and not the middle car. We were in a situation where traffic suddenly stopped, car behind us hit my wife's car and caused her to hit the car in front. No claim was made on our insurance.

There are definitely situations where that is not true. For example, if I knock into incoming traffic, in some states (all states?), it's on you if you then get t-boned.

Try that on the highway and you will be cut off every 3 seconds. Any more than a car length and some WILL fit into that spot whether you let them or not

Proper distance at a redlight is when you can see the bottom of their rear tires. If you cant see the bottom, you are too close. Fun fact, at intelligent stop lights, if you are too far from the person in front of you, the lights will never trigger the turn arrows

Actually, yes, yes they are. You dont magically become at fault because you got rear ended. Its happened to me and yes, the person who started the entire chain reaction was deemed at fault for all 4 cars

Seeing the bottom of their tires will depend entirely on your sitting position and your vehicle. That could force intelligent lights to not trigger turn arrows.
