Not really that much money, but i like the message this sends to employers. It shows that employees aren't just little worker drones who are at their beck and call.

I used to work at a steakhouse that was really bad about this. Servers would get pissed because they'd spend their gas coming in only to be told "we don't need you today go home"

This actually just made my day. I love the 4 hour pay requirement if a company cancels work within 72 hours. I quit a job because I drove an hour away to work that was cancelled at the last minute. They just told us we had no work that day and we never got paid for anything. That was 2 hours of my time and gasoline wasted.

This also puts a check system on the employers who figure their employees should be waiting by their phones ready to go to work 24/7. I realize there are jobs in the emergency response field that do require that, but a retailer needing a minimum wage worker isn't in that dire of need.

Most of the stores are franchised (especially restaurants), meaning they're owned by small business people who barely make a profit.

This is mostly just going to result in under-staffing and shittier customer service, compounding the already miserable retail experience most New Yorkers already enjoy. Silver lining is that this will probably speed along automation.

Yep. I'm pretty sure they demo'ed workerless McDonalds stores in NY somewhere. This looks like it's doing a favor but it's not. It's more of a FU to small business owners and a push for automation for large chains and also requiring management to work longer hours (since they are exempt from these protections as salary workers).

The retail business model does suck, but this policy is going to put many of those employees completely out of work.

Which, to be fair, probably should happen.

But if they all go out of business then you're left with Amazon and Walmart size brands which are infinitely worse.
