It even kept the movie from being decent. I really wish someone in the know would explain why Ubi has stuck with the modern day sections.

I have no idea. The games are cool on their own, no need for that side of it.

** Foreword: I've only played part of the original game. Besides that I've only played 4 (completed) and am playing Origins. **

I read the plot synopsis of the games after 3 had come out already, and I think the concept was really fascinating. But I remember in the original game it felt like you were prisoner of some dark organization... but when I played 4 it was a lot of alternate reality non-sense where Ubisoft and Abstergo were using the memories to make video games?

Origins has an interesting take on it with the whole "you're part of a two person team investigating these 'relics' on location", so I'm kind of excited to see if that goes anywhere. But a lot of the notes and memos and e-mails I've read (just from the first 'real world' segment) seem to just be rehashes/repeats of the information that was in 4.

So ... I'm just really confused. It's not new-to-the-story friendly at all, and it seems exceedingly convoluted at this point. I don't think they could just get rid of the present day aspect without resolving whatever the modern day conflict is fully, it just seems too integral to the way the stories in the game are told. At the same time, it does seem entirely superfluous and unnecessary if it's literally just "lol makin' video games with this stuff" and "they're bad but let's go the whole game without actually advancing the story or resolving anything".

Again, this is all based on extremely limited experience with one game fully and two games partially.
