Timeline 1:

Legend of Zelda - Zelda 2 - Oh shit we don't care anymore start over

Timeline 2:

Link to the Past - Links Awakening - Oh shit, fuck this, start over.

Timeline 3:

Ocarina of Time - Majoras Mask - Wind Waker - Oh shit everybody hates this lets start over and make Ocarina of Time again.

Timeline 4:

Twilight Princess - Oh fuck, they didn't like this either. Time to start over.

Timeline 5:

Skyward Sword - Shit WTF were we thinking, no overworld? I know, let's start over and make the whole damn game Overworld!

Timeline 6:

Breath of the Wild

Timeline 7:

Nobody should give a fuck about handheld games place

The original Legend of Zelda was based on Miyamoto's childhood of exploring the woods behind his house and going on adventures. Directionless exploring and the ability to do things in your own order was the entire foundation of the series.

Zelda/AoL, OoT/MM, WW/PH/ST, and LttP/LBW all have direct connections. The entire series though has been more loosely connected via an expansive timeline, though a game's placement in said timeline is usually an afterthought for the developers. But BotW has no real way of fitting in on the timeline, at least not as we know it.

Not quite.

Skyward Sword is at the beginning, followed by Minish Cap, and then Ocarina of Time. There's a split in Ocarina of Time, where one leads to Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess, while the other leads to Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks; that split was already well-known and people accepted that. However, what's been a hard pill for many to swallow is the third split, where Link dies against Ganon in OoT, which leads to A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, the Oracle games, the original LoZ, and Zelda 2.

Breath of the Wild's timeline placement can't really be determined, since it borrows elements from all three timelines, and I doubt the devs even took the timeline into consideration when making the game.

He's banished but returns how, exactly?

Because when he returns in TP he gets his shit wrecked in.

There are no time travel elements beyond the temple of time. There are several years in which events are fixed and cannot be altered, however, the fact that TP exists means the master sword was never removed from the temple of time which means Ganondorf was banished and stayed banished until TP.

I mean you and I both know the real answer is TLoZ / AoL / LttP / Wind Waker / etc were all created before Twilight Princess was made where it explicitly shows us Ganondorf being trapped and not escaping until the events of Twilight Princess.
