The first movie appears to be canon but the rest don't seem to be (including the sequel to the first movie).

As far as I know, but Pokemon doesn't have the rigid story line that makes movies hard to place or even make without making contradictions.

The First movie (Mewtwo Strikes Back) and--thanks to comment in the Johto arc (during the Lugia episodes)--the Lugia movie are canon to the anime. The Mewtwo special (Mewtwo Returns) is also canon, since it continues on from the movie and resolves that particular Mewtwo's character arc.

The rest of the films are basically glorified filler. The newest one doesn't even try to fit in, and is confirmed to be set in an alternate continuity.

I dont remember the Lugia episode dialogue anymore so I thoufht they had ignored the 2000 movie. Did they actually reference the movie in the Whirlpool Islands episodes? Because I was so confused by multiple Lugia beijg present.

As for Mewtwo Returns, I know it definitely continued where the movie left off BUT Mewtwo didn't wipe their minds this time yet I feel like its never referenced at all afterwards and had no impact or way to really fit into the arc it took place in so I always felt like it was discontinuity.

Is there an actual canon to the anime? I always recall the show basically having no plot, kinda like Inuyasha. Sure there's a big overarching story of Ash trying to get badges and what not, but for the most part it's just self contained episodes with an occasional two-parter.

Misty and Brock showed up again like a month ago. The show as a whole is canon

Even though the show has been running for like 20 years, it has been less than a year since Ash has started his journey.

AKA they dont give a single fuck about canon or continuity.

There was an episode with another Lugia, and Ash and co said "yeah I saw one in the Orange Islands too, I'm cool like that."

Yet hes still 10 years old, which has been mentioned several times, even somewhat recently.

As of the Sun/Moon anime, he's still 10, and the writers have recently gone on record saying that the characters don't age in the show and that no time has passed since Ash originally left Pallet Town.

I never understood this train of thought. Do they really think the target demo is that picky? Like, I remember watching cartoons as a kid and I didn't give a fuck off the characters were older than me. Hell, most people in their 20s and 30s now grew up watching DBZ where most of the characters were well over 20 years old, and that show was huge back then.
Are children now really gonna be like "Ooooh ya know I really like the concept of Pokemon but I can't identify with the characters because they're like 14 years old..." Gimme a break lol.

If they wanted to keep a young protagonist they shoulda just made each new region star a different cast of trainers, and have old ones pop in from time to time to fuck em up and show theyve gotten better.

Apparently, they were planning to do this, I believe with either the Black/White arc or the Sun/Moon arc, but either way, it got vetoed.

Pikachu could get tired of Ashs shit and run away to hang out with a new kid.

I think it's more about Pikachu than about Ash, Pikachu is the mascot. If they have such a high turnover rate in audience as they age out, they shouldn't really have a problem with swapping out the kid. However, I guess they figure it's easier to just keep Ash around and have Pikachu instead of trying to keep a Pikachu around in some other fashion or something.

I heard the newest one is a straight soft reboot of the franchise. If so, good. Let's celebrate the first 1000 episodes, and may it get 10,000 more!

The show's been on for 20 years and there's a new episode almost every week. You do the math.

Basically everything in the anime is canon. The single discrepancy is the fact that no one ages.

The movies have very little issue with fitting with the series, typically thought of coming after the most recent episode before the movie's Japanese release and before the episode that comes after the movie's release.
