I currently work at a grocery store, and have been for a little over a decade now and Im kind of sick of it.

I dont think its completely that Im sick of retail in general, because I realize now that the only time I genuinely enjoyed myself working where I am now were the few years I did the non-foods stuff.

So I think thats the real issue: Im sick of dealing with food lol. Im thinking of looking for employment at some place that sells products I actually care about and wouldnt mind working with.

Of course, looking for non-retail work is always something could (and probably should...) look into, but I feel like I just NEED to get out of the grocery business.

So, if anyones worked somewhere like Best Buy, whats it like? I really cant imagine it being much worse than what Im doing now.

At the very least, you should be looking into managerial work in retail if you have 10+ years of experience.

I'd imagine it's easier work at Best Buy (less product being moved, so less restocking required and whatnot), but I would assume you need to be more knowledgeable in the products. Though given half the best buy employees I've dealt with, that's clearly not a requirement.

I feel like I should, but I really dont want to. Especially not a grocery store manager. Ive seen what they have to deal with and the crazy hours they work... definitely doesnt seem worth it.

Thats something else I should probably look into.

Surprised you weren't sick of it sooner.

I've never known a person who was happy working at Best Buy, but, as you say, it probably isn't worse than working at a grocers.

Yeah, Best Buy almost exclusively hires people who don't know what the fuck they're talking about because they don't have to pay them as much. Then they tend to get rid of long-time employees and re-hire them at their starting pay... or that might have been Circuit City which did that last thing.

Then look for management else. Usually you'll have supervisory positions which pay better than the bottom barrel employees but are still hourly so you don't get screwed on unpaid overtime. However, more realistically, you should try doing something outside of retail.

Yeah dudes I honestly dont even know how Ive lasted as long as I have in retail. Idk, I guess I can just take things at face value and learn how to deal with things.

Ive never really had any career ideas or goals... and this is going back as far as I can remember lol. I like to keep things simple, I dont identify myself by my career so I guess thats why Ive been able to do this as long as I have. Its a blessing and a curse.

I'm similar to you. Never have had a particular career path I'm passionate about or even interested in. Just basically want enough to get by and get the hell home so I can spend time with people I care about. I've also been working for about a decade in the same work. But I'm starting to think about some schooling, nothing much though.

As stated, go for a trade. I wouldve for fun if I hadnt messed my knees up. Live the dream for both of us :P

I worked for BB and GS when I was younger... the former was a decent employer, the latter was only tolerable because of co-workers I liked. Retail is an absolute dead-end though, unless youre especially charismatic and go for something that is wage plus commission in communication or auto sales. I made a killing when I sold cell phones.

See this is exactly it. I see people who are successful but theyre also stressed to the max, working all the time, constantly worrying, constantly tired, constantly miserable. To me that isnt success.

Ive always just wanted something that paid the bills and let me live my life and do the things I enjoy. I dont want to get stuck working 60 hours a week with a long commute and have no time for anyone or anything.

If you're stuck in retail when you have a family and trying to make ends meet, odds are you're eventually going to have to end up working 50-60 hours per week.

^thats true.

I think what I really want is something thats a balance of labor and desk work. Labor gets very strenuous (and Ive already hurt myself and dont irreparable damage doing this) so I dont want to be doing this kind of work forever. Which sucks because it makes me sound like a lazy piece of shit lol.

But I also dont want to be stuck sitting at a desk staring at a computer screen all day.

It does seem like almost every job either involves large amounts of standing or sitting. Granted, some workplaces are adopting standing desks for health so... you can stand and stare at a computer screen >_>

Which I guess would be better than just sitting lol. Its not the walking around that gets me. Its the constant lifting, bending, twisting, kneeling all day long. Or if it gets busy having to go onto the cash register... my scoliosis hates that lol.
