I'd say playing devil's advocate is a constructive way to take an alternate stance in a debate, usually done so to point out the flaws of another stance. His form of arguing is usually just telling you that you're wrong because it makes him feel better about himself. He doesn't argue for the sake of arguing all the time but he does it often enough for me to think it's way worse than merely playing devil's advocate all the time.
