Yeah, college degrees as a whole are worthless now. Only good that can come from college is finding a professor or someone that knows someone that can get you a job, and that still takes luck. Not worth the immense amounts of debt you're putting yourself into.

If you have a technical/industrial degree you can sometimes point to your coursework as experience.

That happens a lot actually. Just apply anyway, unless it says like 10+ years experience. Then yeah youre wasting your time

I went to college and had a job lined up before I graduated and I had no connections other than what i got from networking.

Oh and I had my loans paid off in less than 2 years.

So pls fuck off.

The key is to secure internships while in college. Good interns get converted to full time.

Also need to be good at selling yourself. Know how to kill it during interviews. For my current job, they were looking for a Senior with 5+ years of experience. I only had 1 but interviewed extremely well. And its the kind of role they rarely hire random external people for, they always go for referrals.

I graduated with an engineering degree in 09, when there was a recession. I had to compete with hundreds of other new grads with little opportunities for us. I had to be extra aggressive. I even applied for a role that wasnt directly related to my field but they loved me so much they offered me an engineer position. I ended up taking another, better offer but still.

Well it's not necessarily the fact that you're in a relationship but rather the fact that you no longer seem desperate for female attention.

That's something you can easily work on when you're single if you keep your hormones in check.

Not really an option when it comes to gaining job experience, unless you're a freelance photographer or something.

You gotta look at job descriptions more like a wish list than an actual set of requirements. They're almost always written by HR or at least filtered through an HR lens, and those people don't know shit about the requirements they're listing. Sometimes they'll write it with the current employee's experience in that position, which doesn't make much sense because they didn't have five years of experience in that job's duties when they were hired five years ago.

Just apply to stuff if it looks interesting to you and you feel like you have some of the skills necessary and/or are easily able to learn the rest. You'd be surprised how many interviews you'll get for positions that are seemingly out of your league.

Well that's not true (about jobs not wanting to train employees). It's in their best interest to have training programs, as they can often get the labor at a reduced rate and can test out various people for positions without having to fully commit to a larger salary.

Not saying that it makes sense in every business, but there are TONS of businesses that want to train people.

It is tough to get the interview...probably a long shot, but one technique I used to target CEOs (or people I wanted to get in front of) early in my sales career was to find out if they had a parking spot and wait for them to park and give them a quick pitch. Something along the lines of "I'm with blah blah...have a great product that'll save you money...want to know who to talk to"...so in your case it would be "I'm blah blah...this is my experience and I'm hungry to work...need to know who to talk to"

and if you get a name...call them up and say "Hey so I just spoke with the CEO (get their name) and..."

People are much more willing to help you out when you start the sentence like that :)

Again, its a long shot...but if you have nothing to lose, why not? I managed to get a sale or two from that method hah

you can apply for jobs that require experience if you have none

sales jobs are good but tough

but good things to put on a resume for a sales job is

- you keep track of your schedule (learn outlook or a calendar program and speak to how you keep a tidy schedule)

- talk about any public speaking things you've done...if not, figure out some way to position some skill you've learned into that job

- social media knowledge for entry level marketing

etc

Yes you have to apply a shit ton. I made it a goal to apply to 10 jobs every week. Even if I wasnt qualified. If you have no experience then of course you have to have a good cover letter. I've been in sales for a while now, and yeah there are MLM schemes out there (which are pretty easy to identify), but there are a shit TON of sales jobs

So I'm in San Diego and results are probably higher here than smaller cities....but I searched "sales" on indeed and resulted in 7700 jobs....even if we say 80% of those are garbage that's still over 1000 jobs...this doesn't prove your situation is easy to overcome, but the jobs are out there.

But if you are interested in getting into sales, pm me your resume and ill look it over and make some suggestions.

I can see why youre struggling.

You're missing the point. Your advice is the equivalent of someone asking how to bake a cake and you saying "put it in the oven."

A good resume, good cover letter and actually applying to places is the literal bare minimum of job hunting. The trick is actually standing out amongst your peers, which you cannot do if you're not even being considered for an interview due to lack of experience.

the problem is with the system, not the individual

Could be, but the solution is with the individual, not the system.

... no it's not

systemic problems need solutions at the systemic level

You made connections, and those connections got you a job. It's almost as if that's exactly the point I was making.

Not really, they didn't.

I didn't have connections that other people made for me. I went out and talked to industry people.

How are you supposed to gain connections when you can't even get your foot in the door because of lack of experience

I literally just emailed professionals in the field and politely asked them if i could talk to them for half an hour.

The issue isn't necessarily getting a job, the issue is getting a job where you can at least support yourself, with potential for growth.

Most sales jobs are set up like pyramid schemes.

I agree with you (I'm in sales too) but not everyone wants to go into sales <__<
