All systems would be compatible with the controller and all controls would map to the closest equivalent. If there is no equivalent, that functionality wouldn't be available.

It might seem like there a couple obvious answers, but keep in mind that it's not just about the number of buttons and sticks. There's stuff like pressure-sensitive/analog triggers and gyroscopes/accelerometers to take into account too. You can't really choose any one without losing out on something.

I can't decide between Switch Joycons (assuming they'd allow you to play Wii games) or a PS4/Xbone controller (neither of which I've used but I assume they are good). The big loss with the Joycons is the lack of triggers, but what really uses those, shooting and racing games mostly? I don't really care for those genres, though I don't know if Wii games are enough to justify it. Plus the lack of a proper d-pad is a real bummer.

Mouse and keyboard. Not the most comfortable option for some genres, but there are plenty of games that simply wouldn't be playable with anything else.

Nah. I play games on my computer. Mouse and keyboard. I have an Xbox One controller because third-person games are often better with controllers. I wouldn't pick that as the single controller I'd use for everything, though. First-person games are awful with controllers.

This is a really poorly thought out question. As long as games like Typing of the Dead, Samba de Amigo, and Donkey Konga exist, as well as systems whose method of saving had to be plugged into the controller, it's literally impossible to play all games with one controller.

How does that make it a poorly thought out question? I acknowledge in the original post that sacrifices would be made. It would be pointless to ask the question if there was some perfect answer that could play anything.

And how many systems really had to save by plugging something into the controller? Dreamcast is pretty much the only major one. The original Xbox had slots for it, but it had a hard drive anyway. N64 also had it, but pretty much all the good games had saving on the cartridge.

PS4 controller. I prefer the PS3 controller for 2D games, but the PS4's d-pad is only mildly less comfortable. It more than makes up for it with the vastly improved analog stick and shoulder trigger designs.

i'd want to say gamecube as it was the most comfortable but the nub of a c-stick and only having a "bumper" button one side kills that for me. so I guess 360. I didn't care for what little i've used of a xbone controller (kiosk or whatever at walmart) but the ps4 controller is the first one i've ever liked, but still not as good as the 360, only gripe I have the 360 is the d-pad, but I only liked it marginally less (considering I hardly use d-pads anymore for moving the character) than the playstations, where as I liked the 360's analog sticks much more.

How is the d-pad on the Xbox one controller? That's pretty much my one complaint with the 360 controller, and it looks like the Xbone does it more in the style I like, but I don't know if it's actually better.

Man, I don't know what people are smoking with the GameCube controller. Those are good complaints, but I also have a problem with the d-pad and the button layout. It's an awful controller for 2D platformers.

it just felt very good in my hands. thats what sold me on it. button layout never bothered me much. once I got muscle memory down button layout isn't a problem provided I don't have to over extend any fingers to reach a button.

if it wasn't for that c-stick nub i'd rank it as my favorite controller. but I mention the bumper button thing because while I can't recall which games off the top of my head I know i've played a fair amount of games that have utilized all the buttons of a xbox PS controller which have that extra bumper button and 2 more when counting the analog sticks being able to be pushed down like a button as well.

The problem I have with the button layout is the uneven buttons. It's fine for most GameCube games, but imagine playing something like 2D Mario or DKC where you want to be constantly holding down a run button. Even the Mega Man collection I had on there felt so awkward it was unplayable. Granted, that might be because of the inexplicable decision to reverse the A and B buttons, but it still felt to me like it would have been awkward regardless.

It's an interesting concept in emphasizing primary buttons when a game is well-designed to maximize the controller, but I don't really think that's necessary either. There's a reason why virtually every popular controller since the SNES goes with the symmetrical four-button layout.

not that i needed it. I felt they where going for each button feeling unique under ones finger so a little kid wouldn't have to look down at the controller as much. kids aren't that dumb I don't think, but adults sometimes forget kids can be really quick learners.

thats all speculation on my part to be fair though
