The Armed Forces and the Socialdemocratic-led Government have decided to purchase anti-air system Patriot to boost our ability to defend ourselves from air attacks (like from Russia). The Socialdemocrats have been spending money on restoring a full Swedish military capacity since retaking power in 2014.

Good for them. They need it in these days of Russian aggression.

Sometimes I think, why would we need stuff like that since the world is at peace for the most part these days.

But then I remember the world is at peace because all the good guys have missile defense systems.

Meeh, we should have developing one ourself instead, let Bofors work for its money.
I mean, heck, USA rented a Swedish submarine because they were so impressed by its technology not too long ago.

And yet Americans loves the USS Monitor, the TEC-9, the Gotland-class submarine and using the Jas 39 Griffin in NATO exercises.

Patriot is old terminal-intercept tech. It's likely cheaper to buy the system than develop your own. Considering we're both NATO, it'd be a big waste of resources.

Development cycles are frequently so expensive now that if you're not involved from the beginning it makes little sense to go off and develop it yourself.

Sweden isn't in NATO.

it's NATO-friendly for sure, but not actually in NATO.

wow, til

/embarass

rest holds though. it's pointless to initiate your own development cycle for a missile program when an ally has one already and they want to sell it to you

I worked on one of the PAC programs years ago. I miss working in defense. Blowing shit up is so much more fun than IT system bullshit I do now.
